My english teacher, after recieving my paper on why Clef was a wise
person, told me that she was worried about me. -_-;; I really should
lend her some anime some time... anyone have any suggestions about
something intellectual? Preferably not magic girl... I don't think she'd
take it seriously. I was thinking of Kaze to Ki no Uta - but then she
might also get the Wrong Idea about anime. Sooo... any suggestions?

Get her Evangelion. If you can't get her to like
anime, at the very least she can't claim that it's not
intellectual. In fact, ask *her* to describe what happened
in episode 25 and 26. I'm still waiting for the answer.
Gee I thought that anything goes in those kind of classes. If your teacher
can't understand that the dragon does convey your inner-most personality,
then she's obviously not very understanding. Its kind of like me and my
English class, we're analyzing the poems of Sylvia Plath, my teacher said
that there are no right or wrong answers in that kind of work, its all how
you see it. It pretty darned obvious that your art teacher isn't very open
minded.

That art teacher does have a point though, but may have explained what she
meant the wrong way. She's just preparing you for the real art world. In fact,
sadly, most art teachers will tell you the same thing especially if you keep
using the same thing as your subject. If all you draw is anime, comic,
cartoon, fantasy stuff, or fuzzy kittens, your not really drawing something
unique and all your own that represents you even if you have mastered drawing
Batman or Fairies. It doesn't show you can be versital and creative. I myself
love to draw anime/manga style when ever I have spare time. But when I'm in my
art class and anyone sees my professional works, it's hard to believe I have a
notebook full of Sailormoon heads. :Ş
I'd be copying even more by drawing something
>>actually visibly in front of me....Well. I'm done throwing my hissy
>>fit. ^-^
If you are interested in a career in art, like let's say be a Disney
animator, Illustrator, Comic artist, or even a clothing designer, you have to
know how to draw from real life. Yep, it sux, I know, but all the neato art
jobs in the world require you know how the draw perspective, use contrast, draw
the human body proportionally, and most of all be able to adapt to draw
anything and not stick to the safety of a single style and media. They are just
a few of many key elements a person must know and master in order to do all the
cool stuff. Art schools also require you have these skills with examples of
your work as your proof.
Think of your dragons as a secuirity blanket that you must put aside and try
something new. It's perfectly alright to still draw dragons as well as other
things that you may enjoy, but if you have skill and want to make a career out
of it you have to prove you can draw more than just dragons.
You do have every right to be mad at your teacher though. Instead of trying to
enlighten you, she just pissed you off. I just hope that all I did was
enlightening to you, and not piss you off too. And if I did, I give you
permission to flame me with firey emails from the depths of burning hell.

Hit her with "The Grave of the Fireflies". It will either expand
her consciousness about the possibilites of anime, or depress her
to the point she ceases to function. Maybe both.
FW
I second that. The story is much deeper, much fuller than anything that
was ever animated in English, and beats out several live action
productions.

Lessee... Grave of the Fireflies, for sure. Memories, y'know, the one
by the director of Akira. Key the Metal Idol. Nausicaa, but make sure
it's not the dub "Warriors of the Wind" (which I saw a few days ago-
good LORD, there went most of the main point of the movie, chopped!
*sob*). Other Miyazaki and Ghibli stuff that isn't aimed specifically at
small children (even though I absolutely love Totoro and am constantlly
trying to expand my plushy Totoro collection ^_^;) like Whispers of the
Heart, and I'd definitely add Monokoe Hime, even though it's not out in
North America yet and I haven't seen it ^_^; Id say EVA, but it takes a
bit to really get into it, IMHO, and making her watch all 26 eps....
^_^; I'd say go with Grave of the Fireflies to start.

Definitely. And then Memories. Memories damn near floored me.
Although.. well, it might be better to do it the other way around. If
you start with Memories, it'll give her a chance to build up some
emotional resistance. If you start with Grave of the Fireflies, you're
gonna make her suicidal..

I recommend being inventive; draw people in dragon armour, a still life
of fruit held in a dragon's paw.. ^_^
I also highly recommend getting a copy of "Son of Interflux" by Gordon
Korman. It's an awesome book, and the subject matter relates well with
what you're talking about. You see, there's this one kid in the book
who really likes to paint camels.. ^_-

Done it! ^_~ I do do all forms of fantasy art ya' know ( I just happen to favor
dragons most of all, because of all there different forms, and personalities that
can arise)....Gryphons, warlocks, elves,....but I give them my own unique look, from
as I see them....I don't call that stereotyping....

If you've got it, go watch the SuperS episode in which ChibiUsa
draws Pegasus into what's supposed to be a real-life landscape,
and refuses to take it out even when her art teacher tells her
to. Because, the Chib insists, it makes the picture look good.
You'll feel better.
Maybe you can show the episode to your teacher, too, and see what
she thinks about it.

Damn, why'd I have to go and make half my friends into total anime

You've _got_ to read that book. I'm still laughing, and I read it seven

Scortia.. I'm starting to agree with your teacher.. ^_^;
James
..when fantasy and reality collide.. it's time to change your toon..
To think, I use Subbed anime for my special education students.
I also have one anime poster up in one of my rooms. (I teach at
two schools)
my kids, who are poor think it's great that they can get Japanese stuff
as rewards, since they have barely anything.
Two of my kids dressed as sailor moon for the 31.
Oh and they say they watch it on the "Chinese Channel"
I think it's cable, since all my students live near an air force base.

Boy I hear you on that. My friends all think SM is way cool, and I made up my own
characters and draw them all the time. My art teacher doesn't mind and I think
she kinda likes them. (But they're not for her class. I'm only in Art 1) But my
parents act like it's just a phase. It's not. It was with my cousin, and now for
some strange reason, she thinks Sailor Moon is evil and the devil is clouding my
brain! Geez! My own cousin! TRAITOR!

I went to Marshall last year (my senior year). Small world.
Anyway, I'm of the opinion that many teacher's ARE very good, but many are
also just really bad. The good ones are friendly with their students and
push them, positively, to do better, get on to them when they don't do
their homework, ect.. Generally good teachers are concerned about the
students' education. A bad teacher is more of an athority figure than an
educator. They are more concerned with discipline and keeping the "kids"
from behaving badly. Which doesn't work, most students that are
"disruptive" are going to be worse if you don't want them to be. School
is supposed to be a place for learning not not the shaping of one's
behavior (at least not from teacher's anyway).
My mother was an office secretary at an Elementary school I went to
durring 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Almost a day didn't go by that I didn't
hear about how child like some of the teachers behaved. At my mother's
school, there were two groups (I called them factions) of teachers: The
Pricipal's underlings, and the educators. That school started out pretty
good. But teachers started talking shmack behind others' backs, cheating
and lying to get better standing with the principal, just really childish
shit. Fortuneately my mother managed to stay nutral for 4 years (my mom
is great at that). But when one of her friends, an educator, was
fired/quit she just couldn't stand it. My mother (ex-president of the
school's PTA) eventually became so digusted at the teachers that she
brought it up at a PTA meeting. The parents were pissed at the teachers'
behavior, but nothing changed except that my mother was now being attacked
by the principal's faction. My mom got to a point where she couldn't do
her job because of the childishness of the teachers. She quit and now
lives much less stressful life.
Many teachers at Marshall were like that too. Most of the good teachers
transfered to the new Sandra Day O'Connor HS last year. Good luck to them
all.
Well, that was really off-topic, let's try it again,
-Chrispy Nacho
Don't ever let them embarass you about your content. Yeah, maybe they don't
think it's A-R-T, but if they are knowledgeable about the subject, they will
realize that modern art is all about breaking boudaries. Art can be
anything.
Do (if they're good) listen to them about breaking your own boundaries.
Trying something different, something that you might never in a million
years want to try, can really add to your repetoire. Sure, it's boring now,
but maybe you'll appreciate it later.
Also, keep in mind, that the there are good teachers and not-so-good
teachers. You have to make a grade while your in that class. So you might
have to suck up a little. But don't let them take your spirit away. Do
everything you can now? Later is too late.
