This is the story of Henry (Heinz) von Javorsky, a man who has survived and
thrived in many lands and under many regimes because of his skill with a camera.
In this film, Javorsky's talks to a film historian, his son, and coworkers from

* April 7, 1933 Hitler's letter to Hindenburg gave exemptions to
the "Jewish Problem." "Officials who were already employed as civil
servants on or before August 1, 1914, or who during the World War,
fought at the front for Germany or her allies, or whose fathers or
sons were killed in action in the World War." (pg 77)
* ["Starting May 4, 1942, the Jews from Germany, Luxembourg, Vienna,
and Prague would be deported, except for the employed among them
and the holders of the Iron Cross or other World War I decorations.
Hitherto, those Jews as a group had been exempt from the

Law for Restoration of the Professional Civil Service
In several German states, Jews were dismissed from their civil service posts. -
The civil service, which employed not only bureaucrats but university teachers
and judges as well, was consecrated in German tradition. From the first days of
the regime the Nazis desired to convert the civil service into a 'national'
apparatus and to facilitate the retirement of all persons whom the regime deemed
undesirable. The Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service was
passed on April 7, 1933. It permitted the dismissal of all civil servants of
non-Aryan origin. A non-Aryan was defined as anyone who had at least one
non-Aryan grandparent.

Excerpts from the text of the Law:
'...To restore a national professional civil service and to simplify
administration, civil servants may be dismissed from office in accordance with
the following regulations, even where there would be no grounds for such actions
under prevailing law. Paragraph 2: civil servants who have entered the service
since November 9, 1918 without possessing the required or customary educational
background or educational qualifications... Paragraph 3: 1) Civil servants who
are not of Adecent are to be retired.... If they are honorary officials, they
are to be dismissed from their official status.' (Documents on the Holocaust
39-40)

Much of the country was favourably disposed to the Nazi demand to dismiss Jews
from public service and from positions of economic power, provided that this was
accomplished by means of legislation. At first, at the insistence of President
Hindenburg, the law still protected those Jewish civil servants who had held
their posts since the time of the Kaiser, had fought in the World War, or lost
relatives at the front.

Exemptions for Jewish War Veterans

Hindenburg to Hitler April 4, 1933:
'Dear Mr. Chancellor, Recently a whole series of cases has been reported to me
in which judges, lawyers, and officials of the judiciary who are disabled war
veterans and whose record in office is flawless, have been forcibly sent on
leave, and are later to be dismissed for the sole reason that they are of Jewish
decent. It is quite intolerable for me personally...that Jewish officials who
were disabled in the war should suffer such treatment …I am certain, Mr.
Chancellor, that you share this human feeling, and request you, most cordially
and urgently, to look into this matter yourself, and to see to it that there is
some uniform arrangement for all branches of the public service in Germany...'

Hitler' Answer Hitler's answer, April 5, 1933:
'Dear Mr. President! …I pointed out to the Reich Minster of the Interior the
cases for which you, Mr. Field Marshal, wished to see exceptions made. The law
in question received preliminary discussion at several meetings last week and
will provide considerations for those Jews who either served in the war
themselves, were disabled in the war, have other merits, or never gave occasion
for complaint in the course of a long period of service. In general, the primary
aim of this cleansing process is only to restore a certain sound and natural
balance, and, secondly, to remove from official positions of national
significance those elements to which one cannot entrust [the choice between]

Hitler's Jewish Army

"Not every victim was a Jew but every Jew was a victim." --Elie Wiesel
speaking of World War Two.

"If there were Jews in (Hitler's) armed forces...who served knowing
what was going on and made no attempt to save (lives), well then that
is unacceptable and dishonorable." --Rabbi Marvin Hier, director of
the Simon Wiesenthal Institute.

Thousands of men of Jewish descent and hundreds of what the Nazis
called 'full Jews' served in the German military with Adolf Hitler's
knowledge and approval.

Cambridge University researcher Bryan Rigg has traced the Jewish
ancestry of more than 1,200 of Hitler's soldiers, including two field
marshals and fifteen generals (two full generals, eight lieutenant
generals, five major generals), "men commanding up to 100,000 troops."

In approximately 20 cases, Jewish soldiers in the Nazi army were
awarded Germany's highest military honor, the Knight's Cross.

One of these Jewish veterans is today an 82 year old resident of
northern Germany, an observant Jew who served as a captain and
practiced his religion within the Wehrmacht throughout the war.

One of the Jewish field marshals was Erhard Milch, deputy to Luftwaffe
Chief Hermann Goering. Rumors of Milch's Jewish identity circulated
widely in Germany in the 1930s.

In one of the famous anecdotes of the time, Goering falsified Milch's
birth record and when met with protests about having a Jew in the Nazi
high command, Goering replied, ``I decide who is a Jew and who is an
Aryan.''

Rigg's research also shed light on stories surrounding the rescue by
German soldiers of the Lubavitcher grand rabbi of that time, who was
in Warsaw when the war broke out in 1939.

Joseph Isaac Schneerson was spirited to safety after an appeal to
Germany from the United States. Schneerson was assisted by a German
officer Rigg has identified as the highly decorated Maj. Ernst Bloch,
whose father was a Jew.

Jews also served in the Nazi police and security forces as ghetto
police (Ordnungdienst) and concentration camp guards (kapos).

So what happens to the claim that Hitler sought to exterminate all
Jews, when he allowed some of them to join in his struggle against
Bolshevism and International finance capitalism?

He has not yet published his results. He is continuing his research and
has many more hundreds of veterans to interview. Because of their old
age, many are dying as he continues his research, so perhaps this is a
priority for Rigg.

Wilhelm Frick

Joseph Goebbels

Goebbels was one of the chief secret abettors of the "Final Solution,"
personally supervising the deportation of Jews from Berlin in 1942 and proposing
that Jews along with gypsies should be regarded as "unconditionally

He combined verbal warnings that, as a result of the war, "the Jews will
pay with extermination of their race in Europe and perhaps beyond" with careful
avoidance in his propaganda material of discussing the actual treatment of the

Alfred Jodl

In 1935, Jodl was promoted to the rank of general major. After the
Anschluss he was sent to Vienna as head of the 44th Artillery Command. He
returned to Germany and in September he took part in the invasion of Poland.

appointed chief of operations. In January 1944, Jodl was promoted to the rank of

Toward the end of the war, Kaltenbrunner's power increased greatly,
especially after the attack on Hitler of 20 July 944. He gained direct access to
Hitler. He was very friendly with Fegelein and his wife, who was the sister of
Eva Braun. So powerful had Kaltenbrunner become toward the end that even Himmler
feared him. On 13 April 1945 the chief of the German foreign intelligence
service, Schellenberg, asked Himmler to receive the representative of the Jewish
World Congress, Mr. Storsch, from Stockholm, and Himmler said, "But how am I
going to do that in regard to Kaltenbrunner? I shall then be completely at his

B. DURING KALTENBRUNNER'S TERM IN OFFICE AS CHIEF OF THE SECURITY POLICE AND SD,
NUMEROUS AND VAST CRIMES WERE COMMITTED BY THE SIPO AND SD IN THE COURSE OF
OFFICIAL DUTIES.
As Chief of the Security Police after 30 January 1943, Kaltenbrunner was
the head of the RSHA and the regional offices of the Gestapo, SD, and Kripo.

Wilhelm Keitel

The traditionally conservative Prussian officer Wilhelm Keitel would
practice the same unquestioning obedience towards Adolf Hitler - the supreme
authority of Nazi Germany's fuehrer state.
Keitel rises rapidly through the ranks owing to his "outstanding talent
for organizational and tactical duties," but "lacks any inner sovereignty of
character." (Gorlitz, 140). Like so many other officers, he falls under Hitler's
hypnotic spell. Because he is considered a perfect desk worker, Keitel finds
himself chained to the immense bureaucratic duties incumbent upon him as
Hitler's Chief of Staff at OKW.

Karl Marx, the son of Hirschel and Henrietta Marx, was born in Trier,
Germany, in 1818. Hirschel Marx was a lawyer and to escape anti-Semitism decided
to abandon his Jewish faith when Karl was a child. Although the majority of
people living in Trier were Catholics, Marx decided to become a Protestant. He
also changed his name from Hirschel to Heinrich. <<A lot of Jews did as Karl
Marx did. They may have changed to being a Protestant or a Catholic but theu

In January 1846 Marx set up a Communist Correspondence Committee. The
plan was to try and link together socialist leaders living in different parts of
Europe. Influenced by Marx's ideas, socialists in England held a conference in
London where they formed a new organization called the Communist League. Marx
formed a branch in Brussels and in December 1847 attended a meeting of the
Communist League' Central Committee in London. At the meeting it was decided
that the aims of the organization was "the overthrow of the bourgeoisie, the
domination of the proletariat, the abolition of the old bourgeois society based
on class antagonisms, and the establishment of a new society without classes and
without private property".
When Marx returned to Brussels had concentrated on writing The Communist
Manifesto. Based on a first draft produced by Friedrich Engels called the
Principles of Communism, Marx finished the 12,000 word pamphlet in six weeks.
Unlike most of Marx's work, it was an accessible account of communist ideology.
Written for a mass audience, The Communist Manifesto summarized the forthcoming
revolution and the nature of the communist society that would be established by
the proletariat. The Communist Manifesto was published in February, 1848.

The liberation of Europe is dependent on a successful uprising by the French
working class. But every French social upheaval necessarily founders on the

Erich Raeder

Party (NSDAP) but supported Adolf Hitler in his attempts to restore Germany as a
great power. In 1939 Hitler promoted Raeder to the rank of grand admiral, the

Ernst Röhm

Hans Frank

variety of important posts, including president of the Reichstag and minister of
justice in the Nazi government.
After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, Frank was appointed
governor-general, becoming the supreme chief of occupied Poland's civil
administration. An enthusiastic proponent of Nazi racist ideology, Frank ordered
the execution of hundreds of thousands of Poles, the wholesale confiscation of
Polish property, the enslavement of hundreds of thousands of Polish workers who
were shipped to Germany, and the herding of most of Poland's Jews into ghettos
as a prelude to their extermination.

Wilhelm Frick

Joseph Goebbels

Goebbels was one of the chief secret abettors of the "Final Solution,"
personally supervising the deportation of Jews from Berlin in 1942 and proposing
that Jews along with gypsies should be regarded as "unconditionally
exterminable."

pay with extermination of their race in Europe and perhaps beyond" with careful
avoidance in his propaganda material of discussing the actual treatment of the
Jews, i.e., any mention of the extermination camps. Goebbels's anti-Semitism was

judgement as well as his administrative and propagandist skills.

Rudolf Hess

Reinhard Heydrich

appointed chief of operations. In January 1944, Jodl was promoted to the rank of

Ernst Kaltenbrunner

Toward the end of the war, Kaltenbrunner's power increased greatly,
especially after the attack on Hitler of 20 July 944. He gained direct access to
Hitler. He was very friendly with Fegelein and his wife, who was the sister of
Eva Braun. So powerful had Kaltenbrunner become toward the end that even Himmler
feared him. On 13 April 1945 the chief of the German foreign intelligence
service, Schellenberg, asked Himmler to receive the representative of the Jewish
World Congress, Mr. Storsch, from Stockholm, and Himmler said, "But how am I
going to do that in regard to Kaltenbrunner? I shall then be completely at his
mercy!" (2990 PS).

B. DURING KALTENBRUNNER'S TERM IN OFFICE AS CHIEF OF THE SECURITY POLICE AND SD,
NUMEROUS AND VAST CRIMES WERE COMMITTED BY THE SIPO AND SD IN THE COURSE OF
OFFICIAL DUTIES.
As Chief of the Security Police after 30 January 1943, Kaltenbrunner was
the head of the RSHA and the regional offices of the Gestapo, SD, and Kripo.

Wilhelm Keitel

The traditionally conservative Prussian officer Wilhelm Keitel would
practice the same unquestioning obedience towards Adolf Hitler - the supreme
authority of Nazi Germany's fuehrer state.
Keitel rises rapidly through the ranks owing to his "outstanding talent
for organizational and tactical duties," but "lacks any inner sovereignty of
character." (Gorlitz, 140). Like so many other officers, he falls under Hitler's
hypnotic spell. Because he is considered a perfect desk worker, Keitel finds
himself chained to the immense bureaucratic duties incumbent upon him as
Hitler's Chief of Staff at OKW.

Karl Marx <For those who deny Karl Marx was a Jew>

Karl Marx, the son of Hirschel and Henrietta Marx, was born in Trier,
Germany, in 1818. Hirschel Marx was a lawyer and to escape anti-Semitism decided
to abandon his Jewish faith when Karl was a child. Although the majority of
people living in Trier were Catholics, Marx decided to become a Protestant. He
also changed his name from Hirschel to Heinrich. <<A lot of Jews did as Karl
Marx did. They may have changed to being a Protestant or a Catholic but theu
were still Jews in the eyes of the Nazis. Tavish>>
In January 1846 Marx set up a Communist Correspondence Committee. The
plan was to try and link together socialist leaders living in different parts of
Europe. Influenced by Marx's ideas, socialists in England held a conference in
London where they formed a new organization called the Communist League. Marx
formed a branch in Brussels and in December 1847 attended a meeting of the
Communist League' Central Committee in London. At the meeting it was decided
that the aims of the organization was "the overthrow of the bourgeoisie, the
domination of the proletariat, the abolition of the old bourgeois society based
on class antagonisms, and the establishment of a new society without classes and
without private property".
When Marx returned to Brussels had concentrated on writing The Communist
Manifesto. Based on a first draft produced by Friedrich Engels called the
Principles of Communism, Marx finished the 12,000 word pamphlet in six weeks.
Unlike most of Marx's work, it was an accessible account of communist ideology.
Written for a mass audience, The Communist Manifesto summarized the forthcoming
revolution and the nature of the communist society that would be established by
the proletariat. The Communist Manifesto was published in February, 1848.

The liberation of Europe is dependent on a successful uprising by the French
working class. But every French social upheaval necessarily founders on the
English bourgeoisie, on the industrial and commercial world-domination of Great
Britain.

Erich Raeder

Raeder disliked the domestic policies of the National Socialist German Workers
Party (NSDAP) but supported Adolf Hitler in his attempts to restore Germany as a
great power. In 1939 Hitler promoted Raeder to the rank of grand admiral, the
first German to hold this post since Alfred von Tirpitz.

Ernst Röhm

the militant wing of the Nazi Party as the chief organizer of the party militia
known as the S.A. (Sturmabteilung) or the Brownshirts.
Wounded three times in World War I, he later was one of the original

Erwin Rommel

Only a few months into World War I, Rommel won the Iron Cross Second
Class for bravery in the field when he was injured in the leg after running out
of ammunition and then attacked three French soldiers in the woods. But his
first great strategic triumph is the disastrous defeat he helps inflict on the
Italian Army at Caporetto in which he captures 150 Italian officers, 9,000
soldiers, and 81 guns. Captain Rommel is awarded the decoration pour le merite -
a medal reserved only for senior generals. He is promoted to Major in 1933 and
later to Colonel in 1937 while teaching at the War College.
Throughout the 1930s, Rommel develops a close working relationship with
Hitler, whom he initially comes to admire for progressively thwarting the
Versailles Treaty and restoring Germany's strength.

Alfred Rosenberg

Alfred Rosenberg was a Nazi racial ideologue, German politician, and Reich
Minister for the Occupied Eastern Territories. A native of Estonia, Rosenberg
emigrated to Germany in 1918. He joined the NSDAP shortly after Adolf Hitler.
Due to his skill in writing propaganda, Rosenberg was made editor of the
Voelkischer Beobachter, the official Nazi party newspaper, in 1921. During
Hitler's imprisonment after the failed Beer-Hall Putsch of 1923, Rosenberg
portrayed himself as the ideologue of the outlawed NSDAP.

Hjalmar Schacht

returned to Austria and studied law. In 1931 he secretly joined the Austrian
Nazi party, was appointed Austrian state councillor in 1937, and Austrian
Minister of the Interior (a position which gave him control over Austrian
domestic security).

Julius Streicher

In 1919, Streicher he helped to establish Wistrich, an anti-Semitic
organization, but it became part of the National Socialist German Workers Party

In 1923, Streicher founded and edited the racist newspapers, Der

Eventually the newspaper reached a circulation of 800,000.
In the newspaper Streicher argued that the Jews were responsible for the
depression, unemployment and inflation in Germany...
Julius Streicher was found guilty of crimes against humanity at the
Nuremberg War Crimes Trial. His last words before he was executed on October,
16, 1946, were, "Heil Hitler."

Constantin Von Neurath

Constantin Freiherr von Neurath, German foreign minister (1932-1938) and Reich
Protector of Bohemia and Moravia (1939-1941). Von Neurath entered the foreign
service in 1901. He served in various consular posts until 1932, when he was

Hindenburg's insistence, von Neurath was retained in this position under the von
Schleicher government and the Hitler regime. Because of his reluctance to pursue
Hitler's aggressive foreign policy, von Neurath was dismissed from his post in
1938. He was named Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia and was responsible
for dissolving the Czech parliament and political parties, abolishing freedom of
the press, and instituting the Nuremberg Race Laws. In 1941 von Neurath was
replaced by Reinhard Heydrich and made an SS general (Obergruppenfuehrer).

Joachim von Ribbentrop

In May 1932, Ribbentrop joined the National Socialist German Workers
Party (NSDAP). He quickly moved up the hierarchy and, in 1933, became Hitler's
foreign affairs adviser. The following year he established the Ribbentrop Bureau
an organization that eventually had a staff of 300 people.
Adolf Hitler appointed Ribbentrop as the ambassador to London in August
1936. His main objective was to persuade the British government not to get
involved in Germany territorial disputes and to work together against the
communist government in the Soviet Union.
When Ribbentrop presented his credentials to George VI on February 5,
1937, the British were outraged when he gave the Hitler salute. He also upset
the British government by posting Schutz Staffeinel (SS) guards outside the
German Embassy and by flying swastika flags on official cars.

Baldur Von Schirach

ten he became a member of the Young Germans' League where he developed racist

him to move to Munich. Three years later Hitler appointed Schirach as head of
