MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- The Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River
at Mount Vernon collapsed Thursday evening, dumping vehicles and
people into the water, the Washington State Patrol said.

The four-lane bridge collapsed about 7 p.m., Trooper Mark Francis
said.

Francis said he had no immediate estimate of how many people were in
the water or whether there were any injuries or deaths.

He did not know what caused the collapse.

A Skagit Valley Herald reporter at the scene said a sheriff's office
rescue boat has arrived and rescue crews were looking for people in
the water.

The reporter saw one person sitting atop one vehicle in the water and
could see a second vehicle as well.

Crowds of people lined the river to watch the scene unfold.

The incident has closed northbound and southbound traffic in the area;
traffic is reportedly backed up significantly on I-5.

Somebody on another board was saying that a 5 point- something
earthquake caused the collapse. Not a huge quake, but apparently
enough in a place where they don't really built for them.

of that area and felt no quake. This is going to be a mess for some
time.

There's several secondary bridges over the Skagit within ten miles of the
I-5. Just take one not rated for big trucks.

day, have a 9.0 quake. And Seattle is one of the American cities most
likely to be destroyed by a natural catastrophe, since on top of the
quake threat, it has Mount Rainier. (Other cities likely to die horribly

We had a 5.7 quake last night about 75 miles from here (northern
California, about 750 miles from the Skagit), enough to make the house
creak and groan and startling local residents, since we don't usually get
quakes. Mount Lassen, which last erupted between 1914 and 1916, is

The train service Amtrak isn't bad and I believe the tracks are fine.
They are inspected all the time here. Coal cars and all.

I don't think a temporary reduction until the road is fixed is a bad

caught in this mess. Suggested lowering Train rates for a time. Then

Yes and I know them all. It is going to be a nightmare until this is
fixed. HW 9 is always a mess anyway. The route through town will be
a nightmare as well. I'd say add at least a hour to any travel.

The trucking company that was transporting the oversized (height) load
was Canadian. The truck came from Canada, going somewhere south..

I'd say both socialist and capitalist in this case... Probably faults on
both sides - for each economic system. Perhaps, the laws should require
that the state police double-check the heights of oversize loads before
they go over bridges like that.. Or maybe there are laws on the books
for that, that aren't implemented/used in practice.. Or are archaic,
obscure, etc.

One news story says that it's up to the company shipping stuff to be sure
it clears.. However, one might think where it could take out a major
bridge.. maybe good to have double-triple/etc. checks, by various orgs..

It might be the equipment the truck was delivering is going to a
socialist entity too. For example, a state-owned oil company in Mexico,
who knows...

Not likely a socialist/government entity would be able to build the

On a bridge near Everett I believe there is a warning system to alert
trucks if they are to high. That might be a good idea to put in place
here until they build a new bridge.

I do find it strange there were signs warning of the bridges height.
Then again after the fact it is always easy to find fault.

News says it isn't the first time it had been hit. Also suggested if
it had driven in the middle wouldn't have hit.

The Golden Gate bridge is a lot older, and a bunch of other big bridges.

They all should be replaced of course.

People like the GG bridge, but too bad. Safety comes first. Plus nice $

The Golden Gate bridge is much older, and also carries a lot more traffic
probably.. I think it should take priority in replacement over this
little bridge.

The Federal Gov't seems to agree with me, since they're trying to find a
bridge section (parts/etc.) somewhere to quickly simply replace the span
that fell.

The alternative plan seems to be (so far) to build a new section, not
replace the whole bridge.

Replace that stupid Golden Gate, which would hurt a lot more people if it
fell. Also much older. Something more sleek and modern looking perhaps.

The famous Tower Bridge in London should also be rebuilt, although that
won't be done with US taxes.. or printing/borrowing maybe.. (?) I guess

bridge itself was originally built in the late 19th century (Americans
typically think it was built about the same time as Saint Paul's) and,
once it became considered iconic rather than an ugly tourist trap, is
maintained extremely well.

Governments don't build the bridges, they hire contractors who do. They
make profits. If a private company builds the bridge, the stockholders/
etc. have a big incentive (pocketbook) to see that there isn't corruption
and the best choices are made.. If they don't, they go broke and are
replaced with other stockholders/companies..

However, few bridges in the world/US are probably owned/etc. by private
companies, although most are probably built by those.. The general
public in general doesn't pay as much attention IMO as people with
ownership of something would.. Although probably not 100% true, but
generally..

Private/etc. isn't always better. I just don't think many government
bridge constructors exist in the US anyway, and probably not a lot in the
world. They hire contractors, private companies to do it..

I think the Boulder/Hoover dam was done by government.. government
employees.

The Aswan High Dam was done by socialist entities mostly I think..

Not like they couldn't do it.. Damns/bridges in the socialist world were
done by socialist entities for many decades of course, although might
have purchased various stuff/services from the free-market capitalist
world of course. (Most famously ropes.. although it didn't work out that
way..)

We use private/capitalist Black-whatsit for military services (hired by
government) over recent years, plus the socialist US military..

The USSR was relatively poor. North Korea is relatively poor. Same with
Cuba, etc. AFAIK, there's been no primarily socialist nation that's been
"rich" for a majority of people like "capitalist" nations have been..

My guess, if we used gov't to hire government employees to build bridges,
or that repair of the Skagit River bridge, it'd cost more and take
longer..

Not to say, gov't will buy services optimally from private entities
either, just generally speaking..

If bridges/roads could be free market and have competitors - lots of
roads/bridges competing - it'd work out better. However, just not how it
is, which socialists should rejoice in I'd think..

the Canadian aspect of this contributed to this?

Perhaps, US trucks with oversize loads would have a better system for
verifying that the loads will cross bridges, but if you involve a
Canadian company they weren't adequately integrated into that system, or
had some other system as good?

not to say, Canadian stuff should be excluded from the US - just that it
might not have been worked out as well into the system since there might
have been changes in laws/etc. over recent years where more international
trade was recognized as being important (not like it wasn't always
generally..)

Maybe a Canadian oversize load has less checking? No idea... Mexico
might apply too.. Just a matter of fixing rules/regs/etc. if so.. Might
work the same sending heavy stuff the other ways..

Although, the socialist segment of the economy is responsible here I'd
think, if so.. Private companies don't setup the speed limits/etc. on
roads.. They just drive on it.. Same with giant stuff they move.. Of
course, moving stuff like that costs more, but perhaps in this case, not
as much as it should have..

Maybe Obama could get some $$ for the Dems in there.. 5% or something..
of any additional fees.. I don't know..

Maybe they will replace that bridge.

It will effect business as some lose traffic and some have to much.
I'm going to avoid that area if I can.

You are wrong, Laika. Hoover (then Boulder) Dam was built by
contract, by private companies. I would think some of the work was
done by government employees of course.. At least managing some of
it. Most apparently private however..

The Army Corp. of Engineers may be one US socialist organization that
might do some construction/etc. work.. Maybe even directly builds
some small bridges I'd guess..

Demonrats among us should very much like the Corp. of Engineers I'd
think.. A socialist organization, with NO EVIL CAPITALISM, thus
they'd like it.. True, they probably buy a lot of stuff from
capitalists, and contract with capitalists. At least, until the
DemonRats take over completely that is..
