Ok, so, the current list of potential players:
Akantha: Amazon (thank god, someone to take out the shamans and similar
summoning/raising ilk from afar)
Ilya: ?
Matt-O: ?
naturelover: ?
Wubbles: ...well, here's the deal. first, I thought: "hey, a druid would be
funny, because he can turn into a bear, and that would be fitting, ha!" but
then I thought: druids are pains in the ass. So it's either Paladin or
Assassin. It'll depend on the other choices.

Yikes, CST is UTC-6h, whereas EST is UTC+2h, so that's 7:30AM for me.
Don't bet on me showing up - as I said, I go to a party the night

I usually play sorcs or amazons. Since Akantha is playing a zon I'd
take the sorc.
Since it's untwinked I won't go for FC dependant spells, which leaves
hydra, meteor, FO, blizzard(which sucks as a party skill since it
really enhances the viewing experience of everyone ...)and TS.

Sorry, guy. Was working on that most of the day today, just getting back to
the ol' computer.

It's about 1700 sq feet. 2 story. We have most of the exterior done. Just
need to finish the stucco and we're finished. We have almost all the
interior framing finished, and we're almost to the stage where we insert
insulation and slap up drywall.

If all that building lingo is Greek to you, then I could just say we're
about 80 percent done with the work.

Am currently living next door with the wife in our in-law's spare bedroom.

Had fun playing Diablo 2 with you the other night. Sorry the game was
frustrating to you...

The ability to type repartee whilst committing bloody mayhem is the only
requirement. Matt_O and I played again the other night. I took some days
off work so I'll probably be on bnet quite a bit late nights over the next
week. If Wubbles the Shapely Sorc is online sometime, and you're about with
a muffiny assassin, we could have a bit of fun. Ilya hated the game, so he
probably wouldn't play again.

Hated is too strong a word. It didn't match my preferred slower style of

Unless we're talking about q2dm1 - The Edge. That's an entirely

How about someone (Akantha) posts all the chars, their levels and all
the quests which have already been completed so that I can get a

Or have all plans been cancelled after the beginning of the 1.10 beta?

I get into trouble when I start organizing things. I almost got kicked out
of my family for organizing a family trip to Dallas, just because I
laminated maps and printed up schedules and dispensed suggested packing
lists and then had them all bound into these cute little booklets at
Kinko's. I only freaked out about being behind schedule that one time.
Sheesh.

We moved over to the West realm after Eastern issues. Should we stay there?
Or we could join naturelover's natural habitat and try Europe.

> Or have all plans been cancelled after the beginning of the 1.10 beta?

Actually there are long moments of absolute silence during the games, save
for the spatting of evil minions.

Whether or not they were uncomfortable silences... I can't tell.

I am usually not on until after 11:30 Central Time, and we all generally are
playing on East. I generally prefer pally or barb. Do you have any advice on
the auras I should max out? I'm just getting back into the game and I can't

The evening certainly was fun hack n' slash, but not that serious. I felt
that my experience with Baldurs gate helped me understand everything I
needed to know. One of the guys in the group is a DM for another group that
plays, and this guy hardly said a thing all evening long. I thought that was
rather creepy. (One would think that a DM would really get into being a
character when he / she got the chance).

Oh, well, it was a lot of laughs, and I'll certainly play again if they
invite me back. The highlight of the evening was when me and 2 others
turned on our NPC party leader. The NPC was hunting down escaped slaves and
had promised us a reward, but we figured we needed the experience more than
the gold. Unbeknownst to us, this bloke was a level 6 fighter (and we were
level 2s). One guy lucked out and CRITed the NPC for an instant death [1].
The rest of the evening we were telling him he was invincible, and made him
go up against everything we saw.

[1] I don't know how the game actually works, some of the stuff, like the
handling of CRITs is done with the DM's home-cooked rule system.

CRITS - as in, Critical Hit - the result of rolling a natural 20? I've
actually never been sure about whether or not that was a regular rule or
a house rule. My dm used it, and in some cases, with certain enemies,
you'd need to roll a natural 20 and have some bonuses to even mildly
hurt whatever we were facing.

But you're doing a low-level campaign, which is *always* fun, because of
the creative routes that can sometimes be taken.

Although, it's also a question of what system you're using - GURPS, AD&D
2.0, 2.5, 3, et all. Although a better introduction to pen and paper
gaming is the Dead Alewives' Dungeons and Dragons session. Look it up on
a p2p network if you've never heard it before.

Yeah, we spent most of the evening passing up the DM's chances for
adventure, because we were needing to get the hell away from the city before
our captain's body floated to the surface. Rather loose campaign so far,
with no real dungeon crawls or any such.

Ya, 'tis true. But there was a lot of stuff that sort of "broke the mood."
One of the guys was 40 points away from levelling, but he always ended up
with the party where things were "all quiet" (the other party would be
fending off wolves or whatnot). He was doing all sorts of stuff to try to
wheedle his 40 points out of the DM, but to no avail.

It's been a while for me, but you will definitely need to work on the
elemental resistance aura (can't remember what it's called). It's a
must for Hell mode, but almost as much a requirement for nightmare.
Thorns is pretty useful, too, but if you're getting hit at all in hell
mode, you're dying, so forget that one.
Max out defensive ones, is basically the point. I don't remember what
most are called, but there's one that is physical defense--you'll need
that. And, for sure, get the one that converts dead enemies into
manna. Paladin is probably the best, even more than barbarian, at
survival, because of the auras and the multiple hitting attack (used
exclusively once you get it). Barbarian's whirlwind of death is just
too magic consuming. You have to find a mp-sucking weapon that does
enough damage and has enough hit % to replenish the cost of whirlwind
in only a coupe of whacks. I found a unique maul called bonecrusher (I
think) in normal mode in the ice caves on the fifth area. It was
absolutely amazing (like 100-300 damage, I think)...but you need to
get some mp-draining ring or amulet to help out. Then you'd be set to
whirlwind your way through every map!

Thanks for the advice. I used to go more for offensive auras-- Vengeance +
Fanaticism (IIRC). When I used to play, I hardly did a thing with defensive
auras. The elemental auras are split in 3 types. When you play pally, do you
just sprinkle, say, 2 skill points in each (cold, fire, lightning, poison)
resistance?

Sprinkle skill points in those to supplement whatever items you may
have as necessary. You should be able to achieve 75% elemental
resistance in normal mode about halfway through with an aura.

But there *IS* an aura that resists fire, ice, AND lightning, and
*this* is the one you dump your points into later in the game (I think
it starts at level 18).
That, and zeal. Stop wasting points on offensive auras--you won't use
them later on.

Cool. Much thanks. I'm building a Pally now, but I have a lot of skill
points saved up and didn't know what to dump them on. I wish Blizzard would
stop changing so much of the game mechanics--nerfing one thing after another
(like Jab and WW and Iron Maiden). The only improvement that has really made
the game better has been improving gems and set items.

[J] I think it's a house rule, at least in the edition I use. Of
course, I can't remember which edition I use. Possibly an optional
rule.

In the campaign I'm running at school right now (Temple of Elemental
Evil), there's a sword you can find called Nine Lives Stealer. It's
also mentioned in the DM's guide, in the magic weapons section.
Anyway, it works as a normal sword +2 or something, but it has nine
special charges. If the player using it throws a natural 20 when
hitting, he can choose to use one of the charges to instantly kill the
target. It's a very neat weapon, but only if you don't have the
Critical Hit rule, which leads me to believe that it's a house rule.

Another emerging problem is that I grew up with AD&D Edition 2. Edition
3 was just released a year or two back, and it's the Big Thing now, what
with Wizards of the Coast trying to reinvent Dungeons and Dragons as
being a hot commodity or some such garbage.

But anyway, the rule we used, apparently (just asked a former group
player, as the P.H. doesn't mention critical hits) was that a high
thac0, having to hit a lower thac0 (we went past the -10 thac0 to -20)
would have to roll a d20 twice, first time to make the hit, the second
time we'd roll to see what kind of damage we did.

So yes, it was a house rule, apparently.

Go to any well-stocked bookstore and purchase the player's handbook, and
read it. That's the only book you *really* need in order to play the
game, so if you read that, you're pretty much all set. Everything else
is intuition and experience.

One of the players really hated it (obviously having visions of his Lvl 20

experience). Some people in that room had no business playing Good

Inter-party character arguing and fights...ahh...we had those. Role-play
them for as much as they're worth - but not for the xp, but for the pure
pleasure in acting like complete and utter bafoons for the simple joy de
vivre of it all.

And if you can get stoned while you're at it, things can get really fun.

Actually, playing an evil character is one of the hardest things to do
in AD&D, because of the cliche traits of arbitrary evil - ie: selfish,
self-obsessed, greed, paranoid, etc.

It's one of those things that's always a tight-rope walk when playing in
a group and having a PC who's actually evil, even if he/she is neutral
evil.

[J] Sounds like your average roleplayer. There's always a small
annoyance factor. I occasionally have to threaten my players with
horrendous lethal monsters around the corner if they don't stop
bickering. It gets particularly amusing when the female paladin and
thief get into bitch-slapping mode. Then the mage breaks them apart.

This is why I sometimes prefer the videogame, I want the straight
narrative/rpg experience without all the ridiculous stat nonsense.
That's why adventure games - such as Curse of Monkey Island, for example
- are so appealing to me.

Who would win in a fight between Triangle Man and Ilya Man? Who would it
be, who would it end with? Who hates who? I've got Wubbles and he likes
going up to bat, and Triangle Man has Universe Man, who's the size of a
Giant Chucky Man, he's got a watch with a snack hand, a sandwich hand,
and a refreshment drink hand, and when they meet its a happy hand.

But I've got a stick of gum, and I have Macgyver stuck on my hand, and
so I could concoct a Victory Man, and it would all halt, because of the
falling entire of Wubbles J. Bear onto Triangle Man like a giant ACME
anvil onto Triangle Man.

I was in character... That was actually my first multi-player excursion, so I
wasn't all there. On top of that, I haven't played in about 6 months... I
just need a little more time to get back to where I was. I'm going to kick my
assassin through act II tonight, probably. Or maybe the sorc... Depends on my
mood.

I got my the last piece of my first full set last night. Granted it's a
sucky set, but it's complete. My lvl 18 sorc sports a lovely green ensemble
called Cathan's Traps. I also got my first zon to lvl 30 so I got the see
the Valkyrie for the first time too. I was not terribly impressed, but of
course it's only got 1 skill point in it right now.

Heh. You noticed that. Good on you. I thought it was about time for her

That's funny. I never see you either. :)

I've been sporadic on b-net over the last week because it was my baby's
birthday (not such a baby anymore, he's 8), the end of baseball season with
a madly-paced tournament, and we had family stuff going on all the time.
However, I was going to play tonight so if you're on, let's play!

Don't know if I'll be on tonight. Things are kinda busy (I'm helping my Dad

definitely see ya.
