Cool response. Part of me feels glad to put Pynchon aside for awhile, but part of me wants to reread all of his writing. I find your opening word "alchemy" interesting. Rafi Zabor talked about alchemy in Proust. Both of you have got me wondering about literary alchemy.

Listing some of the various subjects and locales sums up this experience well.

Finnegans Wake has lots of literary alchemy it seems. Eg.: "... buildung supra buildung..." from page 4.

Yes, Finnegans Wake seems to me perhaps the most alchemically powerful book ever written. I think it can turn the lead of normal consiousness into gold.
