Thank you for posting this. I don't remember how I found out about new books before the internet. Pynchon and his new releases have shaped my life. I remember in early 1983 my friend Paul Chuey telling me about The Crying of Lot 49. He got me Gravity's Rainbow for Christmas that year. In 1985 when I graduated college and went to Europe for the first time, I took Let's Go Europe, Europe Through the Back Door and Gravity's Rainbow with me. (I may have taken Zen Flesh, Zen Bones too; I don't remember.)
I didn't finish GR until a few years later. Many folks in the 80's thought the Pynch wouldn't publish anything else, so I felt very excited when I heard about Vineland. I couldn't afford to buy it, but I kept having dreams about buying it, so I splurged. The same thing happened when Mason and Dixon came out.
In November of 2006 my wife's nephew got married in Los Vegas the weekend before Against the Day came out. My mother-in-law had to go to the hospital in Vegas that Sunday, so we stayed in Vegas an extra week until she got better. I found a bookstore and bought the book the day it came out.
I look forward to getting caught up on Inherent Vice next week.
