I enjoyed the passage about the lapdog around page 766. It made me
laugh out loud.

Whenever I read about Scarsdale Vibe going to Europe to buy art I
think about Charles Foster Kane's art collecting.

Watching "Titanic" today I thought about the attitudes towards the
wealthy in Against the Day.

The lapdog scene takes place around p.666. I thought I lagged behind
when I first saw this. I've only reached p. 705.

I only saw the Titantic once, at 32,000 feet on a British Airways
flight on a big screen with great sound. It rocked! I enjoyed
Leonardo quoting Dylan.

What do you see as a major theme in Against the Day?

Sorry about the page number error.

I see one major theme as the idea that the most wealthy and powerful
people in our civilization tend to use any means necessary to maintain
their position. It reminds me of Michael Corleone's comment in the
first Godfather film about the similarities between his father and
senators and presidents. Pynchon sees this power theme penetrating
the worlds of mathematics and the occult, etc.

I found it ironic on first reading to read a millionaire complaining
about the powers of the rich. I do love the book, though.

Bob Wilson called Titanic one of his favorite films.
