Is it too obvious to point out that Leonard Of Quirm's cartoons are not
quite the same as da Vinci's (hence the appearance of Charlie Brown) ?

[ I know, I've tried giving up this annotating lark, but its not easy;
I mean, I keep away from fatuity and gratuitous comment for a couple of
days and my hands start to tremble, my head aches, I get the shivers... ]

Another possible reference in M@A that hasn't made it to the apf as yet
(I can give up this annotating lark anytime, yessir, no trouble, its just
that I don't want to at the moment...) :

the showdown with Vimes, Carrot, the baddy, and the watch is a little
reminiscent of the final shootout in t'Good, t'Bad, and t'Otherone.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly meets The Third Man. Just for the record,
having just finished M@A, IMO (I am not humble) it is *the* best PTerry
Discworld book (bear in mind that I have not yet read SM and IT). Good
character use, nifty twists, the lot.

Mike.

You could re-read it yourself, but I'll save you the trouble :-)

I don't know whether this has come up before, but as I've got the book here
I may as well try and clarify it.

From the top....

When Vimes confronts Cruces with the 'evidence' in the cellar Cruces blows
out the lantern light with the Gonne.

Cruces then has a little conversation with himself, fires at Carrot, who
steps sideways.

Gonne fires four times at Angua.
Gonne is now empty, Cruces flees with Vimes in pursuit.

Cruces manages to load another set of 'pipes' into the Gonne, so there are
now six bullets/slugs in it.

Vimes and Cruces wrestle for the Gonne, gonne goes off.

Vimes gets gonne.
Vimes shoots unintentionally (i.e gonne shoots) at Cruces and misses.

Cruces escapes and closes door behind him.
Vimes fires Gonne at door to open it.

Vimes barges through the doors, sees a group of three trainee Assasins
and fires into the ceiling.

Gonne fires again, smashing a chandelier.

Vimes shoots lock off big, oaken door.

Gonne is now empty.
From here on Vimes, is threatening Cruces with an empty Gonne.

Enter Carrot stage right with the presentation watch. Lot's of excellent
dialogue.

When Carrot kills Cruces, the Gonne is dropped and fires itself.
WHERE DID THIS BULLET COME FROM?

Suggestions anyone?

This is in the tradition of Dirty Harry/Starsky and Hutch/A Team
or every last action cop show/film ever. Guns *never* run out of bullets
except if the hero(es) need a bit of tension to jolly the plot along.

Except for that honourable exception, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance
Kid. They stayed strictly to the 6-bullets per load until right at the
end - but with that many opponents you had to give them a little help.

All together now, dum-dum-di-dum-di-dum-di-dum, dum-dum-di-dum-di-dum-di-
dum-dum-dum-dum-dah, dum-di-dum-di-dah, daaah-dum-dum-di-dum etc
