I have just received an email from Trish at Clarecraft which is
entitled 'sad news' and goes on to say that Clarecraft will be closing
in October. This really is a sad day for those of us who have enjoyed
collecting their peices over the past few years -and I am nowhere near
as serious a collector as many of this group will be. :'-( A sad day
indeed.

Guessing that would also mean the end of CCDE. Damn, I just
discovered them...

Ah hells. I have just spoken to Sally on the phone and she confirms that
this is indeed the case. Damn and buggrit. I was just about to ask her
about putting some of their non-DW ranges in my shop. :(

So _now_ what do we do in August when there's no convention? The garden
here is big, but it ain't that big :)

This is a shame - I wonder if someone will come up with some sort of
alternative Discworld event. To fill the year in between Conventions.

I wasn't up to CCDE this year, I waved off SO and kids with fixed grin
and spent chunks of the weekend indulging in excessive self pity. I was
missing a rare opportunity to see so many friends and acquaintances from
all over Europe and even further in one 'never long enough' weekend.
Many people here I have only ever been able to see at CCDEs.

So I waited for the reports and the pictures to come here and to
alt.fan.pratchett and also to see some of those hardy souls hanging
around in the UK/South East after the event. Kids tell me that Barry R
was also 'planning something' in the next week or so, Barry: if you are
reading this please keep me updated :) , Thanks to those of you who are
already writing accounts and putting up pictures - I missed the event
but at least I don't feel quite so removed from it when I read them :)

I was quite determined to be able to manage 2007, the 10th anniversary
CCDE until I saw the news:
6#14806>

It was one of the more affordable ways for so many people to get
together, it does make me sad to think this appears to have been the
last one.

This is mostly also cross posted to my mostly silent livejournal (since
people are listing them :):

My first thought was "No more CCDEs!", my second "No more figures!",
but my third was that there are no doubt a number of people who are
now thinking "No more job!". Everyone I've had dealings with at
Clarecraft, over the 'net, by phone or in person, has been unfailingly
helpful, cheerful and not just willing but eager to go that little bit
further to make sure their customers were happy. I'm so sorry that
this has happened to such a nice bunch of people.

Indeed.
As sad as this is for fans- myself included- what about the people without
jobs?
I wish all those at Clarecraft well and hope to see them at future events
having fun.

I believe there has been a 'Wadfest' for the past few years, perhaps
the organiser could be persuaded to fill the gap.

Same here. I know they will be missed by many collectors around the globe.

I am not that surprised that Clarecraft is closing, I have long
thought that something was amiss. But that is for another day.

As with many I'll pass on my condolences. I still remember Bernard's
wife babysitting for us at the 1996 convention while we tried to sell
t-shirts on the stall (even though the Podling was far too young to
remember any of this).

My only hope now is for everyone concerned at Clarecraft to find
suitable alternative employment and best wishes for all concerned for
the future.

I don't know yet what if anything will inherit the 'Clarecraft' mantle
but if, for instance, the Guild or similar continued simply as a trading
type organisation there may be scope for continuing in that location.
The site does (or did) have consent for a limited number of public
attendance events per year anyway, which is how they were able to step
in with an 'extra Clarecraft' in 2000.

If that were to be a possibility then keeping the same timing and
location would help with attracting the necessary numbers to cover the
costs.

Fingers crossed anyway. There is a link added to the DWCon site already,
drop me a line with updates or details for news items to add when you
have them.
