<
This is the greatest newspaper Christmas headline ever
written -- and every blessed word is true.
<
An electrician -- first name Oliver -- was blown to bits
in an explosion that occurred in one of the hallways of
an apartment building in a small Canadian town two days
before Christmas.
<
Earlier that week, the publisher had instructed the editors
to use "Christmas-y" expressions in all headlines, if at all
possible, "because our readers really love Christmas."
<
John Robertson, a young deskman, remembered it well
and certainly obliged when he handled the story about
the horrible explosion, then wrote this fitting headline that
appeared in huge type on the newspaper's front page
of its Christmas Eve edition:
<
< DECK THE HALLS WITH BALLS OF OLLIE
<
Robertson was eventually fired by the newspaper
but NOT for writing the greatest "Christmas-y " headline
of all time. He later went on to become one of Canada's
best and most respected sports columnists.
<
Merry Christmas, John Robertson, wherever you are.
