Also just any good Dragon-series web site links would be appriciated.
I've really only just started reading the books.... And now I can't
stop! :)
One question (as I've just subscirbed)... Does everyone read them in
order or what? I started to but was then too tempted to get
Dragonsdawn after I'd read Dragonquest, before which I read The Whit
Dragon and before that Dragonflight. So I suppose I've kinda messed up
the reading order a bit huh?
byes for now,

Reading them out of order hasn't 'spoilt' any of the earlier books for
me (yet). I was just wondering if it really did make a difference. I
seem to have this habbit on going into the bookshop without really
knowing which one to get, and then just taking my fancy there. (As it
were...) :)

Yeah! She has an amazing character. Though saying that I have only
read 4 of the books out of.... How many are there in the series
exactly?

I think some shopping is in order.... :)
Cheers,

John, don't know how old you are but I started reading after Nerilka was
published. So I read the original trilogy followed by Moreta and Nerilka
and then back to the Harper Hall trilogy. As I was buying Dragonquest to
be able to reread it lots more I saw Dragonsdawn in Hardcover. I was so
anxious for it, but couldn't afford being in 8th grade at the time.
ANyway I did get it and have read everything in order of publication since
then. I guess I had a real appreciation for the early stories by having
read the other stories. I do remember the thrill of not knowing for sure
what Pern was and what thread meant when I read Dragonflight. For anyone
with a fantasy leaning read Dragonflight first and the reast in
publication order. For those into science fiction more read Dragonflight
first and then the rest in publication order. I guess girls and boys
would identify with the Harper Hall trilogy and the read everything else
in publication order. The only exception to the publication order is the
short stories in Chronicles that really can be read right after
Dragonsdawn to have those juices still flowing.

Nite Flame who is Skip? I think it's Piemur, but don't recall that nick.
Jancis is his young lady and Fandarel's granddaughter.
I think that Ista Weyr by The Alms has a cool story about what might have
been with F'nor and Brekke and Canth and Wirenth, and Ruth and another
special dragon queen of the silver variety who just happened to have been
helped out at Hatching by Sharra. It made me realize that Brekke and
F'nor need more story time. So I agree.
Dave
Did you ever notice pictures/sketches from the Atlas in DLG?
Dave
And Menolly, DG says she's got four kids, but the books only mention
three of them. Hmmmmm....I think she should have a young daughter who
wants to wear pretty dresses and act dumb-- or a kid who hates music and
wants to go fishing all the time...it would be ironic.
Sorry, I'm in a bit of a mean mood--an ice storm missed our school by
about 1/2 inch on the map, and I have a test tomorrow. Schools will not
be closing. :-( [Yes, here in south carolina we close schools/colleges
when there's an ice storm]

The dichotomy (I consider myself a "student" of Pern as sf literature) is
as follows:
FIRST PASS (2)
-Dragonsdawn (from the landing on Pern to the first fall flown by dragons)
-The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall (five stories stretching from the
evacuation of Landing up to 40 years after landing, where it explains why
those bloodsucking FSP salvagers are still leaving Pern alone today.
SECOND PASS (1)
-Red Star Rising: The Second Chronicles of Pern (New, DRAGONSEYE in the
States, and worth every thirty-second you pay for it) (Explains a lot of
customs e.g. Spring Festival (Turn's End), the Star Stones, Teaching
Ballads, the Crafthalls, etc.)
SIXTH (?) PASS (2)
-Moreta, Dragonlady of Pern (haven't read it; anyone who read Dragonsinger
will know what it's about anyway)
-Nerilka's Story (a novella in the volume Nerilka's Story and the Coelura,
of which the latter has absolutely nothing to do with Pern) (haven't read
it either)
NINTH PASS (which is the "current" one) (12)
Short stories:
-Weyr Search (supposedly to be up on Del Rey's site soon)
-The Smallest Dragonboy (in the collection Get Off The Unicorn, which I
think is OOP? Is it true some of you Americans have done this for
Literature? Lucky you.)
-The Girl Who Heard Dragons (in the collection of the same name; this one's
worth it just for the "So, You're Anne McCaffrey" section.)
Dragonriders Trilogy:
-Dragonflight ("First, better, best." - Anonymous shipfish; Lessa's story
from being taken from Ruatha up to the Five Lost Weyrs coming home)
-Dragonquest (7 Turns after DF; Oldtimers becoming annoying; Holders
becoming annoyinger (?); ends with Canth and F'nor's trip to the Red Star)
-The White Dragon (Jaxom's story; from Ruth's first flight with Jaxom up to
his Confirmation as Lord Holder)
Harper Hall Trilogy:
-Dragonsong (Menolly runs away from home and somehow gets to Benden Weyr)
-Dragonsinger: Harper of Pern (Menolly goes to the Harper Hall and becomes
a journeyman)
-Dragondrums (Piemur goes on all sorts of wild errands for the Harper Hall
and becomes a journeyman too)
Thread's End Trilogy (as I classify it :)
-Renegades of Pern (from Fax's ascendancy all the way to discovery of
AIVAS)
-All the Weyrs of Pern (from discovery of AIVAS up to Masterharper
Robinton's funeral)
-The Dolphins of Pern (from Readis and Alemi's fishing trip mentioned in
ATWOP up to Readis's becoming a dolphineer)
SPINOFFERY:(5)
-The People of Pern (a book sorta like a "photo gallery" of Pern, done by
artist Robin Wood)
-The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern (by Jody Lynn Nye with Anne; check out the
Del Rey site for more info. A sorta Pern sourcebook.)
-The Atlas of Pern (by Kathy...somebody. I haven't heard a lot about this,
but WOULD like to see it, if only to plot Threadfall patterns...)
-Two Choose Your Own Adventure style books, published under the now defunct
"Crossroads" imprint from some publisher, and written by Jody Lynn Nye. All
the info I could gather (pun not intended) was that one is about
Masterharper Robinton and the other about Mirrim. Why anyone would want to
play Mirrim is anybody's guess... :)
Soon to be finished (not counted):
-Dragonharper (in which Anne does a bio of ex-Masterharper Robinton,
possibly one of the coolest Pernese ever.)
Total:
Solely by Anne:
12 novels
1 collection of short stories (First Fall)
1 novella
3 short stories published in other collections
17 total
By others, individually or with Anne:
2 CYOA novels by Jody Lynn Nye
1 reference by Jody and Anne
1 reference by... who?
1 reference by... SOMEONE with art by Robin Wood
5 total
22 total works based on Pern, not counting fan fiction, computer games,
MUDs etc.

Uh not to be overly picky but his name is Skif, not Skip. Close though!
very close! :)

I'm sorry, I just couldn't help myself... :( I know better now! :)
I was just so... 'Desperate' to learn more about what thread actually
was.
...John.
Well... I'm not the same John... But I started reading PERN stories back when
the 1st one was published, Analog I think (Though I was reading two
publications back then so it could be the other one the name of which escapes
me just now) I mentioned this to A.M. and she quite accuratlly guessed my
age. (I was in High school at the time you see. School (THank them) had a
subscription in their library)

Hey there John,
I'm not sure what cover art you've got over there in the UK, but I've a
link to Michael Whelan's homepage off of VirtuaPernMoo's Links page. Check
it out:
http://www.virtuapern.txk.com/links.htm
He's got a /really/ nice assortment of his Pern cover art there (I've got
the ATWoP one as my wallpaper. :>)
Hope this helps!

I got hooked on A.M. and Pern the same time and same place (not same
school) through the short story "Weyr Search" in Analog. Couldn't
wait to find more of both. Can't believe its been 30 years.
"Dragonseye" has brought all the same excitement of discovery back,
can't wait for more. Let's hope for another 30 years for all of us..
Yes, I would like to hear more of Brekke and F'nor. I also want more of
Lessa and F'lar and K'van and T'bor and Menolly and Sebell and Moreta and
Nerilka and Sorka and Sean and Torene and M'hall and....EVERYONE!

I picked up a copy of Dragonsong in a charity shop (thrift shop for Merkins), ignored the hideous cover and bought it anyway. Needless to say, I loved it!
A couple of days later, I started talking to a girl I knew slightly and recommended it to her. It only turned out she was the Masterharper and I the merest apprentice when it came to Pern! That was about three years ago and we're now bestest friends in the whole wide world. Don't it make you feel squidgy? :-)
