Cannabis in the capital? Omnibus bill allows for medical marijuana
legalization in D.C.
December 10, 2009 05:30 PM EST (Updated: December 11, 2009 02:39 PM EST)
With the recent passage of a massive $447 omnibus spending bill in the
House, language was altered to remove the restriction on funding if D.C.
implemented any sort of marijuana legalization legislation. Now, if the
Senate approves the omnibus spending bill as well, District tokers will
be a happy lot.
Washington, D.C. voters approved a referendum on the legalization of the
possession and usage of medical marijuana back in 1998. However, funding
bills for the District ever since have contained language making it
impossible for the city to receive federal funding if it enacted any
sort of pot legalization laws.
What is interesting to me is that this isn't a new measure, but rather
it is an instance of government removing restrictions imposed upon a
popular directive. No matter what your stance is on marijuana
legalization as such, I would think that this is a good thing. The
national legislature should not use its power as holder of the purse
strings to hold down the will of Washington. Of course if they did this
to stop a measure that I didn't support, I might be singing a different
tune, but I'd like to think not.
What do you think? The floodgates are nearly open for pot to flood the
District legally.
Only for glaucoma and persistent migraines, of course...
