I'm curious what other people think about this... and you'll have to
forgive my newbie-ness.
Mike was kind enough to speak with me the other day on the phone, and
if I remember correctly he said there are about fifty missing effects
he still wants to put in the film.
I knew he was not yet satisfied with the film, but I had no idea there
were that many missing effects.
Old news for most of you I'm sure.
Mike mentioned possibly using After Effects to do a lot of the missing
effects.

So here is what I am wondering:

After Effects is a great tool and has nice abilities, but... is it
just me, or does the idea of using After Effects to finish WoSaT make
anyone else a little nervous?
Granted Mike is a genius and creates magic. But for some reason
using After Effects to finish the film... seems like it could run the
risk of having a "cheap" feel... or be less impressive than the "old
ways" Mike did effects.
( Seriously, having Mike scratch the film, and hand paint each
frame... that will always impress me a hell of a lot more than
anything After Effects could turn out. )

I guess the risk with After Effects, is that you have to really know
what you're doing. If not, it comes out looking cheap and amateur.
But maybe that doesn't matter... because we will see the effects and
know that Mike personally made them. By himself. And that's a big
charm factor.

My thoughts here are partially a result of the mess George Lucas made
when he "fixed" Star Wars.
I'm counting on Mike to be smarter than that.

At any rate, it's going to be a while before we ever see a "director's
cut."
Being a one-man-band and a "control freak" (Mike's words) takes a lot
of time. So I wish Mike the best and hope that he can find the time
(when he is ready) to finish his film the way he wants it.
But for it's pretty inspiring how much he devotes himself to caring
for his mother.

That's all for now,
Andy

Well, I remember that a loooong while back Mike sold his JamPac (3D
animation table) so finishing the film in analog would be an enormous
challenge merely by the fact that he would have to build a whole new
table from scratch before he even began to work on the film. I for one
didn't know Mike had the rights to the film to begin with, but if he
does, then there is alt least SOME justice in the world. The film is
his baby and can understand him being a control freak when it comes to
finishing it.

IIRC, the rights are still with Mike in that he signed nothing that
transferred those rights elsewhere. But all the control in the world
doesn't help without the resources to actually DO.

Nah, no matter what the tool, its more important that the wielder is
the most demanding consumer of the results. His skill and tastes will
show through.

Well, each represents a precious memory for the veiwers. (How many
parallels can YOU find? :-)

Its possible that Mike is much smarter.

Andy,

check out this late 90s article about Mike's foray into digital magic.
Scroll down to the "Effects Wizard Goes Digital" part in particular.

If Mike had the time and inclination I'm sure his talent would make
those frames sing the same tune. The right filters can even replicate
any film grain, color, contrast, or vintage, "including scratches,
hairs, dirt, and drunken cameraman exposures".
