Here's what the entire world of anime fandom wants to see: the remastered and
subtitled version of Macross, the Dimension Beyond Space and Time, to be
released by AnimEigo. Fans who have seen the original version of the first of
the three series turned into the Americanized Robotech know that Macross is a
far different creature, more sophisticated and intense than the version that
was seen on U.S. television. At Anime Weekend Atlanta, fans were so anxious to
see the remastered Macross that, when Robert Woodhead of AnimEigo said "We are
going to take every last dime you people have," the audience cheered.
Woodhead treated those fans to a sample of producer Shin Kurokawa's work on
Macross. Shown was how the AnimEigo version removes the major video flaws from
the previous versions seen on television, cable and home video. It's been a
long, expensive and complicated struggle to create a watchable and accurate
version of the mid-1980's classic, so complicated that the release date for
the Animeigo DVD edition has been delayed again, Woodhead said.
Among other things, hard experience from previous DVD releases has shown
Woodhead that not all discs will work properly on all players. Older and less
expensive players have firmware incompatibilities with the encoding of newer
discs, he said. So AnimEigo is going to push back the Macross release date -
most recently planned for the Christmas holiday shopping season - until they're
sure that they can get the DVD's wo play properly on all players. "If we tried
to get Macross out for Christmas, we would not be able to test it properly,"
said Woodhead. "It's too much of a risk."
So, AnimEigo's major holiday release will be the next set of Urusei Yatsura
episodes on DVD. If that works properly, the company will know if they'll be
ready to master and release the Macross discs, which most likely will be
released in late spring or early summer of 2001 (around two years after
AnimEigo announced they had the rights to release a subtitled version of the
series). The extra time will let AnimEigo also work on extras for the DVD
release, Kurokawa (pictured) hopes to get Mari Iijima, who voiced Minmay, to
record a commentary track. In the meantime, AnimEigo is working to get its back
catalog transferred to DVD (with five studios handling those titles). And
Carolina Recording will bring back the English-language You're Under Arrest
cast to dub the television episodes of that series. "

"I just got back from the 2nd day of AWA. Earlier today, Animeigo showed the
1st episode of Macross along with the same side by side images they showed at
Anime Expo. Despite the fact that they ran it on a old projector and on a VHS
tape, I was very impressed. It looked very clean and a lot more colorful than
the LD master they compared it to.
Now on to good news/bad news.
Bad news first. Macross DVD set won't make it out before the end of the year.
Robert Woodhead said they should be done by late Spring/early Summer of next
year.
Now for good news! The reason for the delay is to make Macross look and sound
the very best it can and to make sure there are no issues with it on certain
players. Since Shin Kurokawa is pretty much the only person doing the video and
audio work, it will take some time. He said he will be remastering the audio
track. Animeigo has already spent $100,000 restoring and enhancing it and will
probably end up spending another $100,000. It will be 4 episodes per disc with
a whole lot of extras. A few of the the things mentioned were a voiceless audio
track "So crazy fans can dub it themselves!", and subtitles in the Zentradi
language(Im not sure if Robert was kidding. These are crazy guys.). They are
also trying to get other extras that were exclusive to the Japanese LD release.
This is going to be a great set!
Robert said that the 2nd UY DVD box should be coming in "late December or early
January" in place of Macross. After UY, they will start work on Spirit of
Wonder. Also, the Bubblegum Crisis re-release should be out in about two weeks.
Jedi Ryoga "
The audio remastering is something I had hoped for but wasn't expecting (as it
hadn't been mentioned), & hopefully means a decent stereo treatment. The
voiceless track would also be fun, along with the Mari Iijima commentary.

Not that I doubt this is the case, but well else can the representatives
say to explain the delay?

No comments from Shin or Robert Woodhead yet, outside of AWA.
Reading this shows that they really do care about the fans and what we want.
I've talked to Kurokawa about it and he told me the company is determined to
bring this series out no matter what. So, although this would seem to be bad
news, it's actually good to know they're doing what they can.
"But who here hasn't wished that they could fix politics simply by jumping in a
giant mecha and going to Washington?"

I'm still waiting for these fuckers to fix my Bubblegum Crisis DVDs.
Shit, they have the time to put out Hurricane Live on DVD, but can't fix
the originals yet? Half assed is how they come off looking.
The Cat
What's really gonna suck is when we drop down 260 bucks for these
things, and end up having to wait a year before sending them back for
the second pressing, that will fix some of the problems that will show
up, while being placated with the promise of a 3rd pressing, which, I
should add, will most likely not be available to those of us who had the
first 2 pressing for free, and we will have to buy them on our own.
But hey, that's ok, the third pressing will have extra goodies with it!

Long live The Cat!

I've never bought any DVDs from them so I really can't comment. Alot of people
have called them the Criterion of anime so I thought their standards were high.
So you think they are as bad as ADV?

You sound like you have a grudge against so I'm wondering why you are even
bothering ordering?
A subtitled commentary would be doable, or at the very least a subtitled
segment with Kawamori, like what was done with Perfect Blue. Though as to
whether it will happen or not....
Will someone tell Cat that it was M2K, & "not" AnimEigo that screwed up the
Bubblegum Crisis disc's?
Bit off more? No, just doing more than they initially planned to due to fan
interest.

Again, M2K is handling those, and have already announced their replacement
schedule. Don't recall the date, but it's not a long time off. AnimEigo didn't
produce the disc's, they contracted out to have them done.

You mean that they initially weren't planning on making sure that
"Macross look and sound the very best it can and to make sure there are
no issues with it on certain players" (this was the reason for the delay
according to the original post)?
I guess I won't mind the delays as long as the DVD's are memorable.
I think the whole UY screw up threw their schedules back. Better it happen to
UY than Macross though.
They were initially planning on making sure it looks & sounds the very best it
could, within a smaller budget. They underestimated the interest, and with the
explosion of interest that has arrisen, they've upped the budget to fix
everything they can. As for player compatability, they underestimated that (as
was shown with UY), and as such are going to put the extra effort in now.

They should be that at the very least.
