Regis was his 'sidekick' for a while, right?

RIP, Joey Bishop.

It's a good article/obituary. (I just read it. It indeed mentions Regis.)

That sucks. I wish I could have seen the Rat Pack in their prime.

Before we were married, Kiki and I went to see Frank, Sammy, and Dean
at the old Capital Centre arena near DC. Dean didn't show because he
was feeling "under the weather," but Liza made a surprise appearance
to sing a few numbers. Frank was rude, Sammy was outstanding, and Liza
was incoherent. An absolutely magical evening.

Yep, until he walked off the show one day. But still, it is too bad
that Regis won't be on his show tomorrow to talk about Joey Bishop.
He has a scheduled day off.

Maybe...who doesn't remember why Regis walked off that day

Two details stand out:
One:

"Then, he really became a TV talk show host. His program was started
by ABC in 1967 as a challenge to Johnny Carson's immensely popular
'The Tonight Show.'"

My favorite Joey Bishop Show moment was when Shelley Winters guest-
hosted, and Frank Zappa was among her guests. Throughout the segment,
Shelley was reduced to crying plaintively, "Joey! Where's Joey!"

Two:

"In 1941 Bishop married Sylvia Ruzga and, despite the rigors of a show
business career, the marriage survived until her death in 1999.

"Bishop, who spent his retirement years on the upscale Lido Isle in
Southern California's Newport Bay, is survived by son Larry Bishop;
grandchildren Scott and Kirk Bishop; and longtime companion Nora
Garabotti."

Let's parce this: his marriage to Sylvia Ruzga survived until she died
in 1999, while he's survived by his "longtime companion" Nora
Garabotti. Unless eight years is considered "longtime," then it
explains why the 58-year-long marriage survived.

And when I heard the news about Joey, I couldn't help but recall when
Flip Wilson was the guest host on the Tonight Show in July, 1969 with
JIMI HENDRIX as the musical guest. When Jimi's amp blew shortly after
he began "Lover Man," Flip commented, "....I gotta keep talkin' to the
people....don't forget the Joey Bishop Show is just a notch away!" :)

(The crew fixed Jimi's amp and after commercials he re-started the
song and was able to play it all the way through). I HAVE AUDIO OF
THIS PERFORMANCE BUT HAVE NEVER LOCATED A VIDEO OF IT...IF YOU HAVE IT
POST A NOTE ON THE NG AND I'LL LEAVE YOU A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS.
TIA!!!!!

Joey "razzed" ("ragged" may be a synonym, or "kidded") the youngish
Regis seemingly excessively; and apparently they rumoredly weren't the
best of friends off-stage, as was rumored (i think) in the newspaper
tv & gossip columns like earl wilson, ed sullivan, rona barrett, waldo
winchester/walter winchell, jimmy fiddler, et who else.

Since "reality" way back then was Carson versus Bishop in an era of
the not yet household video tape recorder, Bishop wasn't the more
watched at our chez adobe maison redisdence nor in the tv ratings
generally.

When I did watch Joey's show, it was not my piece d'resistance, though
it wasn't totally bad, yet a little boring for my semi-mature
adolescent mind.

Jerry Lewis and others substituted for Carson, but who subbed for
Bishop?

Jery Bishop was a guest on Regis's cable show in the 80's and they
seemed to get along well. They showed a clip from the Joey Bishop Show
and Bishop revealed he was currently wearing the same slacks he was on
the 20 yr old clip!.

I remeber my parents switching over to Bishop when ever Sinatra, Martin
or Davis Jr. were on. Which seemed like a lot.

Bishop subbed for Carson many times before and after his show. Before
Leno, I think he held the record for the guest hosting the most.

One of my favorite CD's is "The Rat Pack live at the Sands" recorded in
the early 60's. Alot of it is corny shtick but it is still laugh out
loud funny and the music is good too.

What really happened is Dean got pissed at Frank and walked of the tour.
Dean really didn't want to do the Rat Pack reunion but Sinatra talked
him into it. Sinatra was trying to recapture his youth and stay out all
night partying but Dean just wanted to stay in his room. Sinatra got
frustrated with Dean over this and one night while Dean was eating
spaghetti in his room, Sinatra dumped the spaghetti on Dean's head. Dean
walked off the tour that night and they didn't speak to each other until
right before Dean died.

When dean's son died in the plane crash he lost all desire
to do anything.......

I never heard the spaghetti story and don't think it
happened, but that's my guess

Exactly, He lost the will to live. I saw him in Vegas in 1988 and he
still put on a good show but he mentioned his son and almost broke down.

<<<I never heard the spaghetti story and don't think it happened, but

The story was told by Dean's son Ricci Martin in his book about his
father called "That's Amore'".

Possibly "companion" may well have been more than a euphemism in this
case. Remember that Bishop was around 81 when his wife died. I don't
know what his health was like at the time, but Nora might have started
helping care for him before that.

Joey did, indeed, hold the record until Leno came along. In fact, he
guest-hosted the show the night I was born!

Now here are some words of wisdom from our good friend Dr. Phil:

"I feel like I woke up in that movie 'Cocoon'."
