I am reading the book, too, and had one question: Didn't it say Leno
had signed a deal giving him The Tonight Show once Carson left
a week before Carson announced he was leaving? I wonder if Carson
dropped the bomb at the affiliates meeting beacuse he had heard
about the deal Leno made.

Also, according to the book, Kushnick sounds like an absolute lunatic.
But I was amazed at what a horrific life she has had. You half
can't blame her.

It also amazes me how Lassally and Morton had to be agressive for Dave
as Dave is so full of self-doubt.

Is that book by Ken Auletta still coming out?

Hm. Dave's view was "basically, we got married too young." As
I have said, and by the way there's a service mark on the following
so don't get cute and steal it, IT TAKES 2 TO DISENTANGO.

:The rough GE/NBC feud was not overplayed for the sake of comedy, it was

I just wanted to interject here that this west coast schmoozitude,
with its dark side of turning viciously on non-schmoozers, has to
undercut all of the favourable publicity Mia Farrow got last year.
I mean, my god, the contempt for Woody Allen that was just waiting
for something like the Soon-Yi thing to rise up. It all goes back
to his ducking the 1977 Oscars to play in that Village pub he always
swings at instead of attending the ceremonies. (That was the year
"Annie Hall" won Best Picture, Actress, and Director.) "Mean" my ass.

:This Kushnick person was completely out of control at the Tonight show,

As I was saying. Helen K. is the subject of Auletta's long New Yorker
piece that ran about 14 months ago on her firing. The means by which
the weasels sacked her, however, were as slimy as she was mean, which
means, when it comes to means, there's more than one meaning to "mean."

Got that?

:The book has a definite Letterman slant, but

-- but, the winners write the history books, I guess.

Hm. I was really grateful to Bill for excerpting the book. But,
here on the Net, things get convoluted.

Anyway, Bill has addressed this by private e-mail and that's where
matters like this should probably always go.

At the time of her demise (..about a week before it, actually)
she called Howard Stern to defend herself against accusations
of black-balling guests who appear on other talk shows. (a
few days earlier Howard had on a guest (I forget who) who made
this accusation)

She came across as a complete lunatic on Sterns show.

I heard several of her calls to Stern and in the beginning
at least I didn't think she came off so bad... but she did
tell the truth and that was obviously too much for many of
the NBC and other weasles to take...
