all good but nothing new.

The American Idol castoff segment wasn't too bad! They put her over
by the band, Dave talked to her and then she sang going in and out of
commercials.
Maybe...not too bad at all!
I agree. I think she's got an unusual quirky voice that has a unique
appeal and she was very poised. She did a nice job on the song she
sang...I did notice she was close to Felicia and may have been getting
supportive vibes from her. Her hair was a sculpted mess, but it went
with her whole style. Different.

While I usually enjoy seeing the AI contestants, tonight's castoff,
Paige, is my least favorite of the final twelve. I think she's had
laryngitis or a cold, but she hasn't been sounding good at all -- more
than a little "pitchy." Maybe the head congestion stopped up her ears,
but it was really painful to listen to her last week.
And Robin Williams will probably be his irritatingly manic self.
Oh well... I'll hope for the best. At least Usher is terrific!

"Like Tina Fey, Luke Wilson has some stories to share about working with
funny guy Tracy Morgan. Plus: Sandpoint, Idaho Tea Party president Pam
Stout and Alan Jackson join Dave tonight."
That's right: Sandpoint, Idaho Tea Party president.

Oh, dear. I just re-discovered a recent NYTimes article that features
several quotes from Mrs. Stout.
--------
Tea Party Lights Fuse for Rebellion on Right
By DAVID BARSTOW
Published: February 15, 2010
[...]
Not long ago, Mrs. Stout sent an e-mail message to her members under the
subject line: “Revolution.” It linked to an article by Greg Evensen, a
leader in the militia movement, titled “The Anatomy of an American
Revolution,” that listed “grievances” he said “would justify a
declaration of war against any criminal enterprise including that which
is killing our nation from Washington, D.C.”
Mrs. Stout said she has begun to contemplate the possibility of “another
civil war.” It is her deepest fear, she said. Yet she believes the
stakes are that high. Basic freedoms are threatened, she said. Economic
collapse, food shortages and civil unrest all seem imminent.
“I don’t see us being the ones to start it, but I would give up my life
for my country,” Mrs. Stout said.
She paused, considering her next words.
“Peaceful means,” she continued, “are the best way of going about it.
But sometimes you are not given a choice.”

WHY is she getting airtime on the LS?
jesushtapdancingchrist.....These Tea Party members are getting out of
control. I understand disagreeing with policy, but the references to
civil war and violence are unnecessary and uncalled for. Why would LS
give their words/actions more credence by putting them on the air?
Can someone 'splain that to me? My guess is Tea Party members aren't
making up a large portion of the LS audience.
Traci - turning off the show right minute
Well, her segment just ended. She came off as a nice woman who cares
about her country. And then Dave asked her about President Obama's
natural-born citizenship, and she revealed herself to be a Birther. Or
if not an outright Birther, 'Birther-friendly,' shall we say. (She
repeated the urban legend that Obama has spent 'millions' of dollars
keeping his 'records' secret.)
And Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) is her favorite politician.
And Glenn Beck has made her 'think.'
But she came off rather kindly.
Brady
At least it is topical, and the Late Show is cool to let their show be
a forum for understanding the debate.
Kath
She did, didn't she? In spite of her inflammatory writings and the
visible segment of the teabaggers being ignoramuses and lunatics, all
Dave did was to put a human face on a bunch of extremists. Well done!

Seems deliberate on Dave's part; get a nice-seeming old lady who
doesn't seem crazy or threatening rather than one of the real fire-
breathers. (Of course, Dave would have pulled his usual "I'm just a
dumb guy who don't know nothin' about politics" act -- which he did,
anyway.)

Exactly! This is not about giving a rational, opposing viewpoint a
chance to talk and perhaps making great TV in the process. It's
providing an extremist, possibly dangerous, group a mainstream platform
from which to spew their crap.
Booking this woman last night disturbs me deeply. Did the show not
really understand her viciousness? Had they not read her ravings? I'd
love to know the motivation for putting her in the guest chair.
Traci
Equal time to balance their more liberal guests?
Sally
I think the reasoning is pretty clear - He's asked pretty much every
news or political guest to explain the tea party to him and nobody has
been able to do it - so he had someone on who would know. I wouldn't
be worried about it, I don't think their ranks are going to swell
based on Pam Stout?

*Lady Tea Partier Brings Controlled Crazy To Late Show With David Letterman*
Last night, David Letterman interviewed Tea Partier Pam Stout, who has
some interesting ideas about Obama's "documentation," Glenn Beck, and,
for a little blast from the past, weapons of mass destruction.
[...]
Despite her earlier comments about the war in Iraq, Stout claims she's
"a pacifist." And Glenn Beck has made her more "introspective."
Letterman tells Pam "you don't frighten me at all" — but the idea of
Glenn Beck causing someone to look deep inside her soul seems pretty
scary to us.
--------
I thought she presented glaring contradictions to their ideology...be
a friend to business for jobs, but then to avert the financial crisis
she would have let big business fail and people to loose jobs.
Kath - I haven't read any of her vicious writings can some one post an
example?
Word. (Do the kids still say "word"? Oh, never mind, I don't care.)
Anyway, I was bothered by this too. I watched part of it to try to
figure out WTF the point was, but finally had to hit the FF button.
I did enjoy Dave Wants a Cookie. I had been drifting in and out of
Foxy-slumber during the monologue, revived slightly and hit the FF to
skip past the commercials, was starting to drift off again, and then
Dave just totally at random runs off the set for a cookie. I liked that
a lot. And Luke Wilson was OK. But the Tea Partier? All I could think
was WTF?

HPR
I wonder what this woman is like at her Tea Party meetings and in her
email lists. Despite her demeanor last night, we saw hints of paranoid
and fringe beliefs. For instance, she basically said that she wasn't
sure whether President Obama is a natural-born citizen. (First, she said
it was 'irrelevant.' Nice dodge. Then she repeated the lie that Obama
has "spent millions" to hide his "documentation." False.) So if she's
willing to lie like that on the 'Late Show' -- being charitable, let's
say she's simply paranoid, naive, and/or mistaken -- how does she
express it at her meetings? Does she rant & rave about Obama being a
'usurper?' Does she call for impeachment? Anyway, irrespective of the
facts, has Mrs. Stout asked any *other* president to show
'documentation?' Did she wonder about George W. Bush's 'documentation,'
or Bill Clinton's, for that matter? I'm guessing not. What's different,
then, to her, about *this* president? Hmm.
The NYTimes article reports: "Worried about hyperinflation, social
unrest or even martial law, [Stout] and her Tea Party members joined a
coalition, Friends for Liberty, that includes representatives from Glenn
Beck's 9/12 Project, the John Birch Society, and Oath Keepers, a new
player in a resurgent militia movement." And: "Mrs. Stout became an
honorary Oath Keeper, too, and sent an e-mail message urging her members
to sign up. 'They may be very important for our future,' she wrote."
Glenn Beck's 9/12 Project, the John Birch Society, and the Oath Keepers.
Have you heard of the Oath Keepers? From the group's official Web site ...

American people
3. We will NOT obey orders to detain American citizens as "unlawful
enemy combatants" or to subject them to military tribunal.
4. We will NOT obey orders to impose martial law or a "state of
emergency" on a state.
5. We will NOT obey orders to invade and subjugate any state that

6. We will NOT obey any order to blockade American cities, thus turning
them into giant concentration camps.
7. We will NOT obey any order to force American citizens into any form
of detention camps under any pretext.
8. We will NOT obey orders to assist or support the use of any foreign
troops on U.S. soil against the American people to "keep the peace" or
to "maintain control."
9. We will NOT obey any orders to confiscate the property of the
American people, including food and other essential supplies.
10.We will NOT obey any orders which infringe on the right of the people
to free speech, to peaceably assemble, and to petition their government

Er, because the President might do these things? That's what they think?
That President Obama might 'invade & subjugate states,' or order the
military to turn American cities into 'giant concentration camps,' or
begin confiscating personal property, including food and other essential
supplies? Yeah. And Mrs. Stout is an honorary member of this group.
And Glenn Beck has made her 'think.' That speaks for itself.
Brady
There really is no security. That is an illusion. Security is
maintained by people having enough to eat and drink.
What worries me is that there has been no real US reaction to what the
President of France has said to the American People.
In one ear right out the other...
"We need the great American people to understand that the absence of
rules kills liberty." "The world economic regulations cannot go on as
they are. We can't accept a capitalist system without rules any more."
The burden of government debt is what? $100,000 + per American? Does
anyone in this newsgroup got that change on their hands? Or do people
not believe the government debt is real?
US Social Security does not have enough money to cover their costs.
The only time in 20 years that I have been able to buy something that
read "made in America" was food when I was travelling in US last
October.
I was talking to my friend who is Greek, and they have crazy economic
problems even worse than the US. I said because the Greeks use to be
social leaders a couple of millenniums ago on the planet, and have had
such a long history as a civilisation, "American being leaders in the
world must be tiring." and my friend replied "Yeah but look at what
they have accomplished in such a short time." Good perspective! But
imo Sarkozy is correct, and imo US economy is in the state of anarchy.

Ah, but the Tea Party activists don't *want* rules. Government 'rules'
just inhibits the free market! Government rules & regulations is just
another way of Obama & the Democrats controlling the people as part of
their goal of remaking America in the image of socialist Western Europe!
And they don't take kindly to the president of Godless, socialist France
giving them advice, even if he is a 'right of center' politician.
Hell, one of the first Tea Party groups -- if not *the* first -- made
note of the fact that for them, TEA stood for 'Taxed Enough Already.'
(In addition, of course, to it being a play on the Boston Tea Party.
Which was about taxation *without* representation. But never mind that
detail.)
Mrs. Stout said she supported the war in Iraq. Did she support George W.
Bush's tax cuts? Where was she & her 'fiscally conservative' fellow Tea
Party activists when we were (already) fighting two wars without paying
for them? Not to mention the expansion of Medicare in the form of
expanded prescription drug coverage for seniors. (Which wasn't paid for.)
So it's a little difficult for me to take seriously the claims of Tea
Partiers who say they're simply concerned about the deficit & debt when
they just became concerned about it in 2008. Since we're *still*
involved in two wars, would the majority of Tea Party activists be in
favor of letting President Bush's tax cuts expire in order to help pay
for them? I'm guessing not.
Not to mention the hollow & unfounded claims of 'socialism,' 'Communism'
and 'death panels' that's all the rage among Tea Party activists, as
expressed in the ridiculous, over-the-top and often
hilariously-misspelled signs that turn up at rally after rally.
Not to mention the lunatic Birtherism and apparent widespread respect
for Glenn Beck found within the Tea Party ranks, as well as the
coalition of some Tea Party activists & Tea Party groups -- Mrs.
Stout's, at least -- with gun nut militia types like the Oath Keepers.
I think it's clear that for some Tea Partiers, the supposed concern
about fiscal responsibility is merely a proxy for other, often-fringe
concerns and extreme beliefs.
(I *agree* with you, Kath: the US debt & deficit *is* troubling. I care
about it a lot. What I'd like to know is: Where were the Tea Party
activists *years* ago, and what does all their other angry, paranoid BS
have to do with it? They're not helping.)
Wait. Am I on AFL right now, or my Facebook?
Brady
AFL, and providing very good information, too. It's funny, but any
association that connects with Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck, not to
mention the obviously uneducated sign-misspellers, does not connote a
group of deep-thinkers. As far as Mrs. Stout's public "little old
lady" demeanor, on camera on television, it is deceptive. I knew a
famous woman who came across as cool and rational on TV, but a was a
screaming monster off-camera...
Coffee, anyone?
Sally
This woman you mention...is she in any way associated with the saying "I'm gonna
call your mother, tell her you're a whore"?...r
No, she wasn't that one, r, no. The woman I referred to has passed
away, but her good reputation stands intact, along with her real one,
which will never be forgotten by her "friends." I expect a tell-all
book to be written some day.
Btw, that's a very funny comment you made. Malicious if actually done,
but funny.
