David Letterman under fire for transgender joke

The Human Rights Campaign -- the lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender civil rights organization -- did not find find a David
Letterman joke last night about the appointment of transgender Amanda
Simpson to a senior position at the U.S. Department of Commerce
funny.

The group sent a letter today to Letterman and CBS Corp. expressing
disappointment and asking for a public apology.

In a skit during Letterman's opening monologue, the Late Show host
announced Simpson's historic appointment and revealed that she is
transgender, displaying a photograph of her. The show's announcer,
Alan Kalter, then feigned "trans panic," implying he had some prior
relationship with Simpson but was not aware of her gender history, and
ran yelling from the stage.

In the letter, the Human Rights group writes: "You may not be aware
that the punch line in your skit has been used as a defense in nearly
every hate crime perpetrated against transgender people that has come
to trial. For example, the 'trans panic'defense was infamously used
by Allen Ray Andrade, who was convicted in 2009 of beating 19-year-old
Angie Zapata to death with a fire extinguisher after learning of her
gender history."

Simpson, 48, who started her job yesterday as senior technical advisor
to the Department of Commerce, has said the fact she was "Mitch"
before becoming Amanda is relevant if only to illustrate the need for
greater equality.

People sure do love complaining. That was about as tame a tranny joke
as anyone could make.

Conan's joke on the subject: Simpson is "the first member of the
executive branch to lose her executive branch."

Going from giggling at Alan Kalter's antics to pounding on someone
with a fire extinguisher (or committing an equivalent act of violence)
is an awfully big leap.

Someone who's willing to engage in that sort of behavior did not get
to that state of indifference for human life from watching late night
television.

It would be very nice and wonderful if all of society's problems, and
people's misbehaviors and evils, had the simple and inexpensive cure
of not watching TV / not owning firefighting equipment.

I love when people who campaign for equal treatment under the law and in
society get pissed off when they get it.

Good comedians are equal opportunity offenders. Everything is ripe for
mockery. They should be happy the transgender issue is an such an
accepted part of the social structure that a mainstream TV show uses it
in a bit.

Lighten the fuck up fer chrissakes.

Bart Simpson still *is* a woman...a blonde, blue-eyed, 52-year-old Scorpio from
Dayton with two kids....r

Dave doesn't like the gays; that's pretty obvious. He does however
like pliant, nubile interns and "personal assistants".

My dictionary defines "nubile" as "eligible to marry"...somehow that doesn't
work in this context....r

How do you figure that? I'm sure there are gay people who work on the
show.

Maybe...I don't think it is obvious at all

Surely you jest?

I *know* that you've seen enough of Cliffie's posts to understand that
he just makes these things up as he goes along. He thinks (to use the
word very loosely) that anything nasty he says about Dave will make
Sarah Palin look better by comparison.

And yes, I know: You're not joking, and don't call you Shirley.

Your right. Stefanie was the type you keep around for screwing and
under the desk servicings. Not marriage!

Dave's gay guy voice, btw, is chock full of contempt and stereotyping.

Uh, this thread concerns Dave's transgender joke, and the reaction to
same.

No mention was made of gays at all until *you* said the magic word,
which means -speaking of contempt and stereotyping- that you don't
know the difference between someone who is transgendered and someone
who is gay.

Ooooooooooor..........you're just trying to hijack the thread in order
to say something nasty and out of context, just as you've done so many
times in the past.

Since it's never worked before -except to convince the average AFL
reader that you're a complete loon- one wonders why you continue
hitting yourself in the head with that same hammer.

Masochist, perhaps?

When I saw this header, I assumed it referred to the Chastity Bono
joke from a week or two ago...
Dave was talking about the latest People magazine "Sexiest man of the
year" award, and he said that this year Chaz Bono won the in the
"rookie of the year" category.
VERY strong joke.
