I plan on doing a number of chores I couldn't get to for the last two weekends
because they were paving the parking lot...laundry (not about to shlep clothes
on hangers all the way from the street) and then sort out the contents of the
car trunk....
And starting Monday, I may begin annoying the phone company about getting the
service restored that I lost 2½ weeks ago when the pavers cut the line....r

preparation of the big announcement of its new home. Then, I have to
save all the files and delete everything from AOL before AOL deletes

Then I can download the bit torrent for Amazing Race Asia. I started
it tonight but it said it would take like 5 hours! Why does it take
so long to download!??
It is going to rain here in Northern California for the first time in
ages this weekend so I guess I won't be taking the scooter to too many
places as I don't want to get it wet.
I can tell you a story about my adventure on Thursday. I had a
doctor's appointment and had scheduled a ride on my paratransit
service. The appointment was at 2 pm. The rride was late and when it
finally arrived, it was like 1:58.
I went outside to get on the vehicle and screamed at the driver, "I
have to be there at 2 o'clock!" Then I asked her to pull up because
there was a pole in the way of the lift door. I guess I screamed at
her for that too!
Well anyway, she was very offended and radioed in to her dispatcher
that she wasn't taking me anywhere because I was "using abusive
language." I wasn't using abusive language! I was just screaming at
her and if she can't take someone screaming at her, she should get
another job!
The dispatcher told her to leave and she did! I filed a complaint
with the paratransit company and went to the doctor on Friday and life
is good again.

I remember this one time, I was driving and I got to the end of the
street I was on, at which point I had to turn right. A few seconds after
I stopped, a car stopped next to me which was going to turn left. I
looked over at the driver for a second as I had to make sure the road
was clear, and the woman in the car was reeeeally angry at me. I
couldn't hear a thing she was yelling at me because both our windows
were up, but I had one of those 'I didn't do anything wrong........maybe
I did do something wrong' moments.
To this day, I'm convinced I did everything correctly, but man she was
pissed off. The only way it could have been better, was if her breath
would have slightly fogged up the glass.
It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen and still now, when I get
to that same intersection, I start laughing.

After meeting with the exterminator this morning to deal with a pesky
rat issue which has cropped up, I'm settling in to watch the Purdue/Penn
State game. Then I'm off to take some photos for a talk I'm giving at a
January conference.
Tomorrow another photo gig for a restaurant just named one of the top
100 for brunch. And that restaurant happens to be mere steps from my
apt!!

Sorry Crash, I just want to keep it related to baskets. But I see
your dilemma and hope you can find another domain to host your site.
It is quite a bummer that AOL is dropping all the user created
websites with such little notice.
Maybe...happy she has found a new home for the Basket Page and will
give out the new link soon.

Oh yes, it ends. Last time the Canucks got kicked to the curb - I
think it was the first series of the playoffs - the Vancouver Province
did a photoshopped version of GM Place on the front page of the sports
section. Instead of an ice-rink inside the stadium there was a golf
course : D

Hey, I'm sitting right here! There are several AOL people posting via
other sources. But, I've been checking the Google Groups help place
and although people are asking why and when, there has been no
response from Google. A lot of people in that forum are speculating
that it is the stock thing that happened on Friday. But I don't know
enough about the stock thing to speculate but it is odd that after the
stock thing happened, Google Groups stopped working.
In my news searches about the Google going down and the AOL
discontinuing FTP pages, I find that all the articles say that both
Google and AOL are about to be history. I know I'm going to give up
the AOL as I no longer need it to maintain my web page and Donz has
abandoned the Thursday night chat.
Maybe...so after a decade, I'll be AOLless!

AOL is discontinuing FTP & personal Web hosting because it's not a
moneymaker for them.
I think the current Google Groups logjam is nothing more than a
technical issue, which seems to happen every couple of months.

from Google in that little help forum.

It looks as if AOL is desperately trying to right a sinking ship as
the company continues to try and get rid of dead weight. Two of the
once-popular online portal's services now have until the end of the
month before they turn off the lights and users are sent elsewhere.
The two services being cut are AOL Journals and AOL Hometown. The
former is a blogging service for members (a bit like Blogger and
Wordpress), while the latter lets users to create and host their own
web pages. In a short blog entry, the AOL team offers no explanation
for the closings, but it did give information on how users can save
their Hometown/FTP information and migrate their blogs to other
blogging services. Affected users are also being notified of the
closings by e-mail.
In a way, it's not very surprising that these two services are being
cut. They are, after all, fairly redundant in a world where there's a
plethora of other (and probably better) blogging and web page
creation/hosting services available. There can't have been that many
people using those services through AOL, and similarly, there can't
have been that many people working to keep them running either.
As for the rest of AOL, it's no secret that it continues to be a
revenue drag on its parent company, Time Warner. Although AOL managed
to bring in more than a billion dollars in revenue last quarter, the
sources of that revenue highlights AOL's decline as an ISP. Web-based
advertising actually saw a slight increase in income while domestic
subscriber numbers dropped by over a quarter, causing a plunge in
income that wiped advertising's success off the balance sheets several
times over.
Given AOL's circumstances, TimeWarner is supposedly about to be back
in talks with Yahoo over a possible merger. Yahoo's board recently
cleared the way for new discussions between the two companies, which
could result in Yahoo gobbling up AOL in exchange for a stake in the
combined company for Time Warner. Microsoft is also said to be in
talks with AOL, but that may be partially because it's trying to drive
up the asking price for the company and ultimately making a buyout by
Yahoo more costly.
As to whether cutting off AOL Journals and AOL Hometown will actually
make a difference for AOL, it probably won't. However, trimming the
fat will at least help the company in its negotiations with others, as
whatever's left whenever an eventual merger takes place will be the
things that matter most to AOL's core business. <

Went to see the Fab Faux in Boston last night. They were really good.
I wasnt a huge Beatles fan, I mean we all know the hits, but I thought
this group was great. Will Lee is the frontman and does most of the
talking and is quite the showman jumping and running around the stage.
Tom Malone was part of the horn section. We had to leave to catch our
train home but I was surprised that the concert lasted as long as it
did.
Anyway I really enjoyed it and it would love to see them again. Last
night they performed their Pychedelia show.

I just checked the Google and some of my newsgroups are starting to
show new messages. Of course, not alt.fan.letterman! They have
updated messages through the 4th so I guess that's good. I posted a
message through Google and it hasn't shown up yet but it has only been
a few minutes. It probably will take a while.
Maybe...so hopefully, Google is on the way back.

2. Everyone's favorite volleyball star Misty May-Trainer is out of
Dancing with the Stars. She did something to her Archilles tendon and
needs surgury. It didn't say whether she ruptured her Archilles
tendon but why else would you need surgery? That also puts her out of
her volleyball career for several months. That is not an easy injury
to come back from. She did it while dancing -- I don't get why these
athletes do the Dancing with the Stars and risk injury and their
careers.
3. Animal Planet says all next week (week of 10/6) there will be
*new* episodes of Animal Cops and/or Animal Precinct's every night at
10 pm ET/PT. Wow! It has been about two years since they had actual
new episodes.

a cast for six months

I don't particularly enjoy driving anymore. I used to enjoy driving. I
mean, like on road trips. Now, not so much.
Actually, I don't mind driving on, say, busy city or suburban streets. I
kind of like it. I just don't like driving long distances on interstates
anymore.

I'll give y'all a description of my mother's 88th birthday celebration
in a separate post but suffice it to say that there was a rat in
attendance -- not the human variety, either, but the large, long-
tailed kitchen variety. An exterminator, a rat trap, peanut butter,
and a loud noise in the night were also featured.

No opening act. There was a 10-15 minute intermission. It started
shortly after 8pm and was still going right before 11pm.
When we were leaving, they just started Hey Jude which I assume was
the end. They also had a cool video presentation throughout the show.

I admit I wasn't planning on watchin' the Vandy game Saturday since
all four of my sisters and I were busy preparing for our Mother's 88th
birthday party in Atlanta. But word got out around the house that,
miracle of miracles, Vanderbilt was beating Auburn! So I saw Myron
Lewis intercept a pass with only 2:16 left in the game and we all
gathered around the TV to cheer Vandy's historic victory. Now Vandy is
5-0! When has *that* ever happened? I'm one of four Vandy grads in
my family (including the ex-husband) so this win sort of makes up for
Alabama beating UGA last weekend -- at least for me. Even the non-
Vandy grads in the family were singing "Dynamite, dynamite, when Vandy
starts to fight!" Everyone else here in Athens, however, is still
feeling the pain of the Dawgs' bitter loss.
Now the question is whether Vandy will defeat Georgia... and whom will
I root for?

In the process. The exterminator was back today and checked where the
tracking powder ended up. He covered some holes with some sort of space
age mesh and put down some baits. I saw a brief flash of the filthy
bastard last night, but hopefully the mesh will keep him out.
