What a Wonderful Web We Weave
We turned back in ar the end of Wanda Jackson, and, um, what was
that??
**********************************************************************
That was a great sounding band, in cool costumes, with an on-fire Jack White
playing a weird arrangement for...some elderly lady from the audience who
won a contest? I'm guessing.
As Dave said Wanda Jackson is the Queen of Rockabilly, sometimes
referred to as The First Lady of Rockibilly.
She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 and dated
Elvis whilst they toured in 1955.
And STILL Warren Zevon is not in the HoF.
Nope. Sympathy/tribute gig. 50 years ago she was quite something.
But time passes, and there was a reason they had her mike turned down
so far that you almost couldn't hear her voice.
You put Katy Perry in front of that band and you'd have really had
something.
katy perry? you're kidding, right? please tell me you're kidding.....
Then it was a shame it turned out so poorly. Maybe they could have had a more
stripped down arrangement to match her voice. The wall of sound only emphasized
her weakness.
Why?
I'm not usually crazy about her choices of material, but she's got a
great voice and knows how to deliver a performance.

Well, yes, but think of all the people it made happy: 1.) Wanda. 2.)
The band (who were obviously enjoying themselves). 3.) Anyone who
remembers her as she used to be.
Few of us age as gracefully as Betty White.
~Pete
Nope. Sympathy/tribute gig.

So add her to the list with Jeff what's-his-name, Tom Dreesen, Jimmy JJ
Walker Dynamite, Ronnie Spector,...who else?

She should have sung "Walk On The Wild Side"... with a really thick German
accent. And, instead of singing "doot-da-doot", she should have sung
"boppity-bo, boppity-bo, boppity-bo"...
Rickles....
(If that's the way you want to play it)....r

Me? Sarcastic?
Yeah, right.
The stupendous Gerty Molzen, from May 7, 1986. Will Lee wrote in his
Prodigy Chat in 1997:
"[Gerty] yelled at me backstage for whistling. And I whistle all the
time."

In the context of Miss Arkansas and the worst Altman phone call ever
(and that's a high bar), it just fit into the week perfectly.
--Dave Sikula
On the other hand, you got Kaley Cuoco delivering the kind of story Dave likes
best of all: one with a misbehaving animal, a disfiguring injury (with exposed
bones!), and doctors who treat their patients like slabs of meat....
As for the yodeling ventriloquist, kudos for combining *two* revolting talents
in a single performance...if they don't dig up some plate-spinners pretty damn
soon, I'm going to start campaigning to bring Topo Gigio back to the Ed (I saw
him on a bus stop ad not long ago, so he's still working *somewhere*)....r

yes it was, especially the second one.
I hope they keep this up and Dave doesn't tell Tony when he wants it.

As Mike 'splained in the Wahoo...the second one was the unscripted
(uncue-carded) and Tony had to wing that one.
Thanks Ive fallen behind on my Wahoo reading. Im sorry MikeMack.
Bill
How could the second one be funnier in Spanish, since it depends entirely on the
name "Focker" which doesn't sound like anything in Spanish....
(Back in the late 80s, the newspaper here in Phoenix had a problem with the
lineup at some big music festival because they couldn't bring themselves to
mention the Butthole Surfers by name...they ended up listing them on the bill as
"The B.H. Surfers"...oddly, they had no such problem with another group at the
same concert: The Chingaderos)....r
I guess it was the concept of Tony doing a "human" sub-title bit that
struck people funny, plus the way they were sitting. It was a take-off
on interpreters. It was, to me, an oblique bit that worked. It looked
spontaneous, and that's always welcome.
Sally
The second one was funnier because of Dave's reaction to it. It was
off the cuff and Tony did a great job,
Like I said hoping to see more of this.
Bill
Hahaha! You're too funny, Dave!
I would hate to be your cook :P

I luff the zong "Valk on the Vilt Side." (You're valking mit
danger...)
Sally
You're NEVER supposed to whistle or sing backstage. They might hear it
out front in the audience. (I got yelled at, too, for singing
backstage blithely...by the enraged stage manager.) I'm still
sorry...I'll never do it again.
Sally
Since Will was whistling backstage, there was no audience.
That's a superstition. Actors and singers are the most superstitious
people on earth. It's like when Kelsey Grammer said you're not
supposed to mention Macbeth in a theater. It's bad luck.
Sally
The point is -- since Will was whistling backstage, he wasn't onstage.
Which means the show hadn't yet begun. Which means there was nothing
heard by a non-existent audience. Since you wrote that "they might
hear it out front in the audience," I was explaining that there was no
audience to hear it during the moment Will was whistling.
And if there were an audience there, waiting for the show to begin, if
you know the layout of the Late Night set, they still wouldn't have
been heard it.
Which is a different goal post from your new rationale, that it's a
superstition.
>
> Since Will was whistling backstage, there was no audience.
You know, I was thinking Gerty's performance would make an excellent
addition to someone's video archive, or perhaps someone's Letterman-themed
Youtube account... just sayin'. I'm surprised it isn't on there already,
although I found a German guy's homemade music video featuring Gerty's
version.
Generally, is it more difficult to get away with posting clips of musical
performances, because of the rights issues?
Good question; dunno.
I'll have to first dig out the tape before posting it. And digging it
out might be a challenge; won't know until I begin the hunt. :)
Backstage is a big place, Donz. Whistling or singing is justifiably
banned whether there's an audience or not. And whistling is, I
believe, a superstition. There are the wings (the sides of the stage
that are off-stage,) and then backstage, which takes in a lot of
territory, depending on the theater, and then the dressing rooms.
I don't know how much performing you've done, but I've done quite a
bit. Let's not debate this too long. The whole subject is easily
confused by undefined terms and territorial misunderstandings.
The whistling backstage as a superstition was not a new rationale; it
was a memory that came back to me.
Stage managers and certain artists are sticklers for obeying certain
rules. When I say the audience might hear it, that's true. It's also
not good to get into the habit of singing backstage, because you might
forget and do it during the course of a performance.
Btw, just because a show hasn't started yet doesn't mean the audience
is not in their seats, waiting. I don't know the backstage layout of
the Late Show set, but acoustically speaking, how different can it be
from other theaters? Do the flats have sound-absorbing qualities?
You wrote:

been heard it.
So, please tell me what "they still wouldn't have been heard it"
means, kindly. ;) Are you referring to the whistling? Btw, since you
imply you do know the layout, is there one big dressing room for the
band, or does each band member have his/her own private d.r.?
Sally
The point, yet again: whistling backstage at the Late Night would have
had zero effect on an audience that might or might not have been
there. Not how much more clearly I can make this.
This isn't about your or my experiences in performance. It's about the
physical layout of the Late Night surroundings. If you want to go with
superstitions, fine. But that's quite different to what you first
posted, re its effect on an audience.
