Great opening to his show. I didn't just quit smoking that easily. I
stopped and started again several times. But when a radiologist put up
my chest ex-ray, he showed me my lungs: full of smoke. Told me I'd
better quit right away. He didn't have to say much more. Seeing smoke
swirling in my lungs was a powerful image. I wanted to get clean, so I
stopped smoking immediately.
I could've gotten a good job in radio, a couple years later, as an
interviewer of people on the street. Good money, too. But when I had a
mic in my hand, ready to ask questions, a craving for cigarettes came
over me like a heavy blanket. I had to have a cigarette in my hand
during the interviews. Needless to say, I had to forego the job or
become a chimney again. Very strange experience. I felt like I was Ed
Murrow...who always had a cigarette in his hand.
Well, I'd rather be alive. Lung cancer killed Murrow, but he was
hopelessly addicted. I had a situational addiction. Giving up smoking
requires a major shocking bit of news to make you decide to give it
up. It's very hard. Craig was kidding when he said you simply don't
put the cigarette between your lips and light it. Come on, Craig. You
know an addiction requires hitting rock bottom before you can want to
get rid of it.

Uh, no, Craig was simply telling it like it is: ya just gotta decide
to stop and then stop, period. It's psychologically painful, but all
it comes down to in the end is being stronger than a one gram paper
tube of tobacco.
And yes, I did. 18 years ago.

It's Thanksgiving, so I just thought of how thankful I am that we all
write what we want and share each other's thoughts and feelings with
only infrequent snipes and true hatred. Nah, I mean it. I'm thankful
we can all keep up with and enjoy each other via this Internet thing,
for however long it lasts.
