Lea Salonga has performed for sold-out audiences around the world.
From Carnegie Hall in New York City to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre,
the Tony Award-winning singer draws countless fans. Playbill describes
her as "never less than thrilling, giving a haunting, moving and
beautifully sung performance."
On Saturday, Salonga performs in Texas for the first time.
"I'll sing a mix of old and new and songs I'm personally connected
to," Salonga said. "But quite a bit will be musical theater."
Fame came to the Philippines native through musical theater. When she
was just 17, she was cast as Kim in Miss Saigon.
"The president of a singers union told me about the auditions,"
Salonga said. Despite her mother's skepticism, Salonga headed to
London in 1989 for final auditions and got the part.
The role took her to Broadway in 1991. When her time with Miss Saigon
ended, the artist played Eponine in the Broadway production of Les
Misérables.
In between her musical theater work, Salonga was the singing voice of
Mulan and Princess Jasmine in Disney's Aladdin.
Salonga lives with her husband, Robert Charles Chien, and their 3-year-
old daughter in Manila. Last year, the president of the Philippines
presented her with the Order of Lakandula, the highest honor for a
Filipino civilian.
She also writes for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. In an article last
week, Salonga described a stop in Washington, D.C., to help with
disaster relief events. The Philippines sustained major damage from
recent storms and a typhoon.
While in the nation's capital, Salonga got a personal tour of the
White House from Cristeta Comerford. A Filipino, Comerford is the
first woman to serve as executive chef at the White House.
When Salonga comes to Texas on Saturday, she'll perform at the
