Hi all,

Planning to do a bit of spray painting over the w/e on the LR.

I've got 5L of synthetic enamel, thinners, a spray gun and a compressor.

The problem is, I've never sprayed with a gun before, so if anyone has any
tips/FAQ pointers etc. I'ld be grateful.

Cheers,

Andy C.

A good starting point might be a visit to:

The guy who runs this site is a Land Rover enthusiast and has always
answered my mails. Sound bloke.

Hi Guy's,

Spraying synthetic is a slightly different method to Cellulose or 2 Pack
paint mainly due to slow air drying times. You have to be very patient
when painting synthetic it can't be rushed.

Couple of tips if it's not too late.

Only slightly thin the paint probably less then 10%. Synthetic is a
very heavy material to shove through the nozzle of the spray gun so
you'll need more pressure (not thinners) than usual so set it to about
50/60 Psi, Although you'll be better to experiment first.

Assuming you not using a LPV spray gun.

Remember it is synthetic and will take an age to dry even with fast
thinners added. The main problem will probably be paint runs.

Don't overthin.
Apply light even coats.
Give plenty of time between each coat.
Apply final coat a bit heavier to help produce the shine.
Have a paint brush handy to pull up paint build ups if any.

IIRC it's red you're using and it may be a poor coverer and require an
extra couple of coats. If you lived more local i'd do it for you.

If all else fails give me a call.

Cheers,

Steve.

Thaks all for the tips.

It is indeed red (Masai red) which I'm using. I'm going to start today with
the bulkhead, engine side - the learning experience can happen where it's
not too obvious!!

One question - the spray gun (typical shiny metal thing made by Draper, with
no instructions!) has 2 controls knobs - one adjusts a sleeve which is
pushed back when the trigger is pulled, and the other is on the side of the
gun, near the nozzle - I have a feeling is may adjust the air to the 2 side
nozzles - altering spray shape maybe?? Am I tight about these, and what sort
of settings should they be at.

TIA

Andy C.

Masai Red, Hey i've actually got that colour listed on my website so i
know what the colour looks like.

One control knob is for spray width and the other is fluid control at
least it is on the expensive spray guns like Devilbiss.

No set rules on setup really just trial and error until you build up
confidence to attack the larger panels.

If your painting the vehicle in stages Andy remember to clean the spray
gun immediately after use and remove all traces of paint in the gun,
This avoids dried paint particles blowing out later on and
contaminating the finish. Synthetic paint won't dissolve in it's own
solvent it will just break up inside the guns airways Etc.

Good Luck

Steve.

Steve,
What are the most common causes of the "orange peel" effect? and how
can you avoid it?

Guess who else is on the masai red

Orange peel is caused by Air pressure to low, Spray gun held to near the
surface or Material to thick.

Increase pressure, Spray between 8-12 inches from surface or use a
little more thinners.
