Just given the coil and dizzy cap a good soaking with WD40 but am trying to
find the place online that sells the rubber boot for the cap and coil.
Anyone know who does these please? (It looks like a rubber glove with 9
fingers!!)

Also, is it worth putting the coil in a waterproof box? If so does it need
an earth from the fixing lugs?

The biggest problem is condensation forming inside the dizzy when
cold water hits the outside. A vent pipe from the engine breather
via the dizzy body to a vacuum source helps a lot to prevent
this.

It does.

What distributes the sparks to the spark plugs? AFAIK the V8i is a
petrol engine not a diesel. The fuel may be injected but it still
needs a spark to make it go BANG. B-)

Fine until the varnish layer cracks and starts to trap moisture
and/or muck making nice paths for tracking... Keeping the thing clean
and possibly coated with a water repellant(*) is more reliable in the
long term.

If condensation inside the cap is a problem then that strikes me a
design problem in letting wet in in the first place.

(*) Something like a thin smear of silicone based polish.

Doesn't it have a pack of coils, one per plug, so no need of a
distributor.

Silicone grease in all the connections works well, as does a thin smear
of it around where the cap mates to the distributor body.

But my sig in the original post says D1, it's a 3.9 V8 with injection hence
the V8i

Early fuel injected V8 rover engines (3.5 and 3.9, including "interim
serpentine" used to end of D1) all have a distributor to distribute the
sparks to the correct plugs at hopefully the correct time.
Later engines using Gems or Motronic (Thor) engine management systems have
no distributor. Instead, they have a bank of coil packs at the rear of the
engine, computer controlled.

Note:- An engine management system generally refers to total control of the
engine, both fuel and spark, whereas a fuel injection system is simply that,
it controls fuel but not spark. management systems were deemed necessary for
modern emissions and torque-management for traction control etc etc.

The original poster is correct in his designation of "V8i", as it is a
fuel-injected V8. Simples.

I hope whoever did the service tightened the sump plug up correctly........
for their sake! If they didn't, then do I detect a new engine at their
expense?

No it's not - at least not in the Land Rover world It's a fuel injected

which parts book he gets out.

The term never existed when carb V8s were still around and only appeared
with the 4.0 litre. To use it now to apply to all fuel injected V8s is
just dumbing it down.

I would imagine its got something to do with the over bonnet high water i was driving though before

Ill strip it tonight but expect lots of water / mud to be on the motor commutator.

Once thats cleaned up, I expect it will start going again.

Interesting, our 90 injected 3.5 V8 says Tdi on the wings. I do seem to
recall the 2 1/4 petrol it used to have was a tad short on grunt, but it
didn't have eyewatering consumption!! Think we're going to have to
replace the Tdi wings soon on account of the remodelling we seem to do
each time out!

s'funny cos Land Rover put a nice big sticker on the back of my D1 that
clearly says "V8i" ~ as does the workshop manual, parts book and owners
handbook. In fact, in the workshop manual the 4.0 litre is consistently
referred to as "V8" - so how's that for dumbing down? Oh, and just to
burst your bubble a bit more, your 4ltr isn't 4ltrs. It's the same
3950cc as my 3.9V8i - it was called the 4.0 to differentiate it from the
3.9 when they introduced the GEMS ignition system.

Of course the term didn't exist when carb engines were in use - cos they
ain't injected. The first V8i was a 3.5 used in the Classic Range Rover.
Before you start spouting off about the history of Land Rover engines
and their official designations (i.e as applied by LR themselves) you
need to read a bit more.

Indeed.. Bollocks are a totally different kind of injection system. I've
often suspected Landrover fitted them to V8's but never actually found any
when pulling the engines apart. I was sure that my 101, RRC and Disco all
had bollocks but they definately didn't have a badge on them which goes to
show... everything is not always as it seems, just because you can't always
find them doesn't mean they aren't there.

The brew won't do much harm but that sugar will after time. Strip the
keyboard as much as you can and wash it in plenty of fresh flowing
water, dry of the bits then leave to dry properly somewhere warm
(above boiler, in airing cupboard) for 24 hrs, reassemble. Don't
worry about getting any circuit board wet, it'll survive a brief dunk
and good drying.

Well, the land owners like that sort of thing so you can be sure it'll

Sadly the land owners don't like off-roaders so you can be sure the

Eh?

Unfortunately we've got the situation where one government, which has
been passively hostile to off-roaders, is about to be replaced by one
that's actively hostile to off-roaders, and has the "cost savings"
excuse for just about everything, so expect even less of an ear for
us when it comes to byway closures in the future.

I used "That Tin " to help seal some antennas

If my recollections are correct I must have used it 20 or so years ago for sealing
some Specialist Low Earth Orbiting Satellite Tracking antennas

As they're still up and working I must've done a proper job

Now to get back to "The other shed" , the rocker shaft had gone the top half is
halfway through a rebuild

Back on the road for next weekend I hope , I've got a hillside in the North
Pennines to play on

Cracking bit of kit. I have used UI-View, laptop and handheld and a TINY 2
TNC on holiday this year to show our location on our tour around Europe. My
Dad called us to say welcome home as we pulled on to our Estate! He also
advised us of a Uk Call following us from Italy in to Switzerland who ended
up camping down the road from us at Interlaken. Nice bit of fun!

OK so its OT

But have a look at http://www.crosscountrywireless.net/

Chris has some new kit out with built in GPS

Its a cracking piece of gear which I've been playing for the last month or so

I started off with the early version and got the updated one at Barnsley

Well worth it , you couldn't buy the gps for 20 quid

Once I managed the US centric map put Hawes in the UK... Hawes is in
the Yorkshire Dales though not the North Pennines. The North Pennines
are (mostly) north of the A66:

http://www.northpennines.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=9099

The two areas do share a border in the south though.

I'll try and remember to look at the map on the weekend.

ooops

I regularly play north of Hawes

And even north of Moulting Teds Pub

But you wont find me with a traker switched on up there

It might give people wrong ideas

If I do its on a frequency that wont find itself on the internet

Chris's bit of kit can be used for receiving only but is really used for Radio
amateurs with a callsign

ARPS doesn't appeal to me much either but geocaching is a good hook
to hang getting the kids away from the PC or TV and out into the
fresh air with a bit of excercise. The offer of just "going for a
walk" is nearly always turned down but say "lets find a cache" and up
they jump...

Must admit after a top half rebuild I could do with some cache as well

I've been told I need a new self adjusting pulley for the fan belt etc.

They tell me it comes as a complete unit at 60 odd quid

Its only the bearing that seems suspect

Suggestions would be appreciated

( Polite of course Nige ;-)) !! )

Well it sounds alot. Is that for one with a green oval on or a dare I say it
Britpart?

Landrover in the past quote me 45 for a bearing that I picked up at Bearing
Specialists (across the road) for 5.50 IIRC. Mind I probably sweat 30 of
sweat chiseling the old bearing out!

I just have a need to know how stuff works and have a fiddle. Once I've
satisfied the curiosity I generally move on to something else.

I do like the idea of knowing where my car / caravan is mind , I'm sure as I

I could do with something that tells (others) where I left me, let alone
my kit.
