You're right - autumn '56, though the "looks like it's made of meccano" 107-inch station wagon seems to have continued for a bit after the 109-incher became available.
The station wagon continued at 107 inches until the Series 2 came out as the Series 1 chassis for the wagon was different from the other models. The Series 2 chassis was designed to suit all models. As a result, the diesel was never available for the Series 1 wagon, as it was for its benefit that the 2" was added (useful of course for the 2.25 OHV petrol engine based on the diesel when it came shortly after the Series 2 was introduced.
