I posted this to another list, and decided I'd like to hear the intellfn
listers' comments on it...
Over the years, psychologists have worked on defining types of character.
One of the major studies is the Myers-Briggs, often cited by career
counselors, etc. as a method of understanding character. Myer-Briggs was
further explored by a
scientist named Kiersey, whose major work is a book called Please
Understand Me.
There are actually sixteen different kinds of variant temperments. However,
I'm going to list six different types -- at the end, I'll go down several
lines and give you my take on which LFN character fits which type.
Let's see whether you agree or disagree and maybe this will give you some
ideas for further conflict in your analysis.

The Portrait of the Mastermind (iNTj)

Of the four aspects of strategic analysis and definition it is the
contingency planning or entailment organizing role that reaches the highest
development in INTJs. Entailing or contingency planning is not an
informative activity, rather it is a directive one in which the planner
tells others what to do and in what order to do it. As the organizing
capabilities the INTJs increase so does their inclination to take charge of
whatever is going on.
It is in their abilities that INTJs differ from the other NTs, while in
most of their attitudes they are just like the others. However there is one
attitude that sets them apart from other NTs: they tend to be much more
self-confident than the rest, having, for obscure reasons, developed a very
strong will. They are rather rare, comprising no more than, say, one
percent of the population. Being very judicious, decisions come naturally
to them; indeed, they can hardly rest until they have things settled,
decided, and set. They are the people who are able to formulate coherent
and comprehensive contingency plans, hence contingency organizers or
"entailers."
INTJs will adopt ideas only if they are useful, which is to say if they
work efficiently toward accomplishing the INTJ's well-defined goals.
Natural leaders, INTJs are not at all eager to take command of projects or
groups, preferring to stay in the background until others demonstrate their
inability to lead. Once in charge, however, INTJs are the supreme
pragmatists, seeing reality as a crucible for refining their strategies for
goal-directed action. In a sense, INTJs approach reality as they would a
giant chess board, always seeking strategies that have a high payoff, and
always devising contingency plans in case of error or adversity. To the
INTJ, organizational structure and operational procedures are never
arbitrary, never set in concrete, but are quite malleable and can be
changed, improved, streamlined. In their drive for efficient action, INTJs
are the most open-minded of all the types. No idea is too far-fetched to be
entertained-if it is useful. INTJs are natural brainstormers, always open
to new concepts and, in fact, aggressively seeking them. They are also
alert to the
consequences of applying new ideas or positions. Theories which cannot be
made to work are quickly discarded by the INTJs. On the other hand, INTJs
can be quite ruthless in implementing effective ideas, seldom counting
personal cost in terms of time and energy.

The Inspector Guardians are not only concrete in speech and cooperative in
getting things done, they are also directive and attentive in their social
interactions. Though not always open about directing others, still they are
not the least bit reluctant in this regard.
About ten percent of the general population, Inspectors are characterized
by decisiveness in practical affairs, are the guardians of time-honored
institutions, and, if only one adjective could be selected, "dependable"
would best describe this type. Whether at home or at work, iStJs are
extraordinarily reliable and dependable, particularly when it comes to
inspecting the people and things in their field of vision. Inspectors can
be counted on to scrutinize the products and accounts of the institutions
they serve-the company's books, the farmer's crops, the manufacturer's
goods-but also to examine the attitudes and actions of those around them.
Inspectors are earnest and thorough in their inspecting; all must go under
their magnifying glass, so that no deviation from the official standard is
left undetected. It is their duty to spot and to report any and all
discrepancies, though they prefer to work behind the scenes and not
confront the deviators. Indeed, iStJs are rather quiet and serious types,
making their inspections without flourish or fanfare, and, therefore, the
dedication they bring to their work can go unnoticed and unappreciated.
Inspectors have a distaste for and distrust of fanciness in speech, dress,
or place. Their words tend to be simple and "down home," not showy or
high-flown; their clothes are often practical and conservative rather than
of the latest style or extravagant; and their home and work environments
are usually neat, orderly, and functional, rather than up-to-date or
luxurious. In their choice of personal property (cars, furnishings,
jewelry, and so on) price and durability are of primary concern, comfort or
appearance given small consideration. "Classics," antiques, and heirlooms
are especially prized, having achieved a certain time-honored status --
iStJs prefer the old-fashioned to the newfangled every time. Even on
vacation, "no nonsense" seems the term for this type, who tend not to be
attracted by exotic foods, beverages, or locales.

The Guardians called Supervisors are not only concrete in speech and
cooperative in reaching their goals, but they are also directive and
expressive in their social address -- very directive and very expressive.
Supervisors do not hesitate even for an instant to express their opinion of
someone's performance, nor do they withhold their demand for improvement.
Supervisors see themselves as responsible for seeing to it that those in
their charge do as they should. They feel proud of their responsibility and
of their efforts in making others responsible. Representing from ten to
twelve percent of the general population, eStJs can be counted on to do
their duty no matter how difficult it may be, or what sacrifices it
demands. And they can be tough-minded about others' derelictions of duty.
Supervisors naturally gravitate to the role of supervisor in their
relations with others, and feel especially responsible for making sure that
people behave in keeping with agreed upon procedures and standards of
conduct -- or else face the consequences. Like a seasoned, stalwart umpire,
they will set their jaw and point out mistakes and transgressions to anyone
who steps out of line; they feel obligated to do so, and they're sometimes
surprised when the culprit does not seem grateful for their reprimand.
Supervisors are gregarious and civic-minded, and are usually pillars of
their community. They are generous with their time and energy, and very
often belong to a variety of service clubs, lodges, and associations,
supporting them through steady attendance, but also taking a vocal
leadership role. Indeed, membership groups of all kinds attract ESTJs like
magnets, perhaps because membership satisfies in some degree their need to
maintain the stability of social institutions. Like all the SJs, ESTJs
worry a good deal about society falling apart, morality decaying, standards
being undermined, traditions being lost, and they do all they can to
preserve and to extend the institutions that embody social order.
Supervisors are so in tune with the established, time-honored institutions
and ways of behaving within those institutions, that they have a hard time
understanding those who might wish to abandon or radically change them.

Portrait of the Protector (iSfJ)

In addition to being concrete in speech and cooperative in getting things
done, the "Protectors" are also informative and attentive in their social
roles. There strength is in protecting others from harm and loss since they
tend to practice doing this even when they are children.
The primary desire of the Protector is to be of service and to minister to
others, but here "service" means not so much providing others with the
necessities of life (the Provider's concern) as protecting others from
life's pitfalls and injuries. There are probably lots of Protectors in the
population, as many as ten percent. A good thing, because they are vigilant
in their protecting, and seem fulfilled in the degree they can insure the
safekeeping of those in their family, their circle of friends, or their
place of business. They also derive a great deal of satisfaction from
caring for others, and they offer their comfort gently and helpfully. They
enjoy assisting the downtrodden and can handle disability and neediness in
others better than any other type.
Protectors go about their task of caretaking quietly, unassumingly, and
because of this their efforts are sometimes not fully appreciated. They are
not as open and talkative as the Providers, except with close friends and
relatives. With these, however, they can chat tirelessly, and for as long
as it takes to cover in minute detail everything concrete in their lives.
But their shyness with strangers is often misjudged as stiffness, even
coldness, when in truth iSfJs are warm-hearted and sympathetic, giving
happily of themselves to those in need-although, curiously, their interest
may wane when the recipient is no longer in trouble.
Their quietness ought really to be seen as an expression, not of coldness,
but of their sincerity and seriousness of purpose. Like all the Guardians,
iSfJs have a highly developed puritan work ethic, which tells them that
work is good, and that play must be earned-if indulged in at all. The least
hedonic of all types, iSfJs are willing to work long, long hours doing all
the thankless jobs the other types seem content to ignore. Thoroughness and
frugality are also virtues for iSfJs. When they undertake a task, they will
complete it if at all humanly possible; and they know the value of material
resources and abhor the squandering or misuse of these resources.
Protectors are quite content to work alone; indeed, they may experience
some discomfort when placed in positions of authority, and may try to do
everything themselves rather than insist that others do their jobs.

Portrait of the Teacher (eNFj)

The Idealists called Teachers are abstract in their thought and speech,
cooperative in their style of achieving goals, and directive and
extraverted in their interpersonal relations. Learning in the young has to
be beckoned forth, teased out from its hiding place, or, as suggested by
the word "education," it has to be "educed." by an individual with
educative capabilities. Such a one is the eNFj, thus rightly called the
educative mentor or Teacher for short. The Teacher is especially capable of
educing or calling forth those inner potentials each learner possesses.
Even as children the eNFjs may attract a gathering of other children ready
to follow their lead in play or work. And they lead without seeming to do
so.
Teachers expect the very best of those around them, and this expectation,
usually expressed as enthusiastic encouragement, motivates action in others
and the desire to live up to their expectations. Teachers have the charming
characteristic of taking for granted that their expectations will be met,
their implicit commands obeyed, never doubting that people will want to do
what they suggest. And, more often than not, people do, because this type
has extraordinary charisma.
The Teachers are found in no more than 2 or 3 percent of the population.
They like to have things settled and arranged. They prefer to plan both
work and social engagements ahead of time and tend to be absolutely
reliable in honoring these commitments. At the same time, eNFjs are very
much at home in complex situations which require the juggling of much data
with little pre-planning. An experienced eNFj group leader can dream up,
effortlessly, and almost endlessly, activities for groups to engage in, and
stimulating roles for members of the group to play. In some Teachers,
inspired by the responsiveness of their students or followers, this can
amount to genius which other types find hard to emulate. Such ability to
preside without planning reminds us somewhat of an ESFJ, but the latter
acts more as a master of ceremonies than as a leader of groups. ESFJs are
natural hosts and hostesses, making sure that each guest is well looked
after at social gatherings, or that the right things are expressed on
traditional occasions, such as weddings, funerals, graduations, and the
like. In much the same way, Teachers value harmonious human relations about
all else, can handle people with charm and concern, and are usually popular
wherever they are. But Teachers are not so much social as educational
leaders, interested primarily in the personal growth and development of
others, and less in attending to their social needs.

Portrait of the Crafter (iStP)

The Crafter Artisans are not only concrete in speech and utilitarian in
getting things done, they are also directive and attentive in their social
roles. Though directive like their Promoter counterparts, their
directiveness is leavened by a good deal of attentiveness and
seclusiveness. They do not approach strangers readily, but once in contact
do not hesitate to tell them what to do. And they can be quite forceful in
this, such that others tend to do their bidding.
Like the other Artisans, Crafters live a life is artful action, but their
particular nature is most easily seen in their mastery of tools of any and
all kinds, from microscopic drill to supersonic jet, from potter's wheel to
grand piano. A tool is any implement that extends or varies our human
powers-vehicles, musical instruments, cutting devices, and weapons are just
four of the many categories of the tools that surround us. Most of us use
tools in some capacity, of
course, but iStPs (only ten per cent of the general population) are the
true virtuosos of tool work, with a natural ability to command tools, to
bend them to their wishes, and to become adept at all the crafts requiring
tool skills. Even from an early age iStPs are drawn to tools as to a
magnet; tools fall into their hands demanding use, and they must manipulate
them. Indeed, if a given tool, whether scalpel or earthmover, is operated
with a precision that defies belief, that operator is likely an iStP.

I often felt Nikita would be either an ENFP or ENFJ. Any thoughts on that?

Somehow, I don't think the test applies to sociopaths. (I mean Scary
Maddie, not you!)
I took the test twice, ten years apart, and got nearly the same scores
both times. The first time I was an INTP, with the "I" by only about
two points, then the second time I was an ENTP, this time with the "E"
by only about two points. Guess I got slightly more outgoing.
Only about one in ten thousand Army officers are ENTP's, which means in
the new downsized Army, there should only be about half a dozen of us.
The surprizing thing was that when I retired, the guy they picked to
come in and replace me was also an ENTP. Since one of the traits of an
ENTP is a complete inabilty to manage our own schedule, I had to feel
sorry for my secretary, who got stuck with two of us in a row!
However, I think Sea wanted our opinions on the characters, not
ourselves, so I'll take my shot.

Michael: ESTJ
Nikita: ISFJ
Walter: ENFJ or ISTP

I'm just glad there are no ENTP's with that kind of power, or they would

the test and for me the results seem pretty accurate. Looking at some of the
other posts on who each LFN character would be, I'd say this is a apt
classification for Walter.
