With her maiden public exhibition,Feminine Mystique, at
Triveni, Tania Gangulee Batra revealed, amongst other
things, the nature of women; their strength of soul and
other traits described with remarkable insight. "Women"
she says, "are everything", remarking with a degree of
childlike innocence, "They have greater responsibilities
and have to accommodate more than a man, both in sadness
and pain."
About the women in her works, Tania says, "All are
inspirational, coming at the instance of a moment like
electric current. There is no room for speculation and my
instinct is to paint barely knowing how to resist or
resent. "I like to experiment with different medium. Then
I start working with my fingers and use the palm to get a
feeling of texture. My figuratives are a portraiture of
moods living through characters I create."
Jubilation a triptych in charcoal and lead captured
youthful fragrance in deft movements of the body, evoking
love-of freedom of the mind, energy of spirit. Tania
combines both impressionist and expressionist viewpoints
with bold and pleasantly different approaches that have
strong graphical appeal.Lines are a predominant feature.
"I smudge vacant spaces with charcoal dust picked up by
running fingers over it. This allows me to interact more
closely with the medium. I finished this work in eight
hours fiat and had to rest for two days."
She shows us the back of her hands affected by arthritis.
"I paint from head, mind and eye. It often puts a lot of
stress on me. For relief I take breaks allowing feelings
to meander to my drawings. As you will have noticed, I
don't stick to a particular idea or concept. It is
spontaneous. Lots of excitement and less hunting for
motives. I believe in the simple execution of feelings
with subdued values of pigments."
The artist's beautiful images of grace and spirit also
appear to be inextricably linked with catastrophe and
circumstances conspiring against human life. Tania's mind
was preoccupied by the uncanny premonition of an
advancing tragedy she transcribed to canvas. This
contains a foreboding of scenes which would unfold the
September 11 incident to the world five months later.
She recalls, "I was shocked by the outcome of events.
Also to the similarity it bore with my casual meandering.
I couldn't bring myself to work for the next three
months."
The Silent Tears from Heaven consummate her impression as
six semi abstract works in charcoal and oil bearing a
shift from her normal style. She adds, " when I completed
the first one, I asked my daughters Amba and Avni for
their impression. They found it depressed and disturbing
and gave a casual title Burnt Manhattan.
Similarly, The Pentagon Blaze in a mix of orange and
yellow shows the US Defence Headquarters engulfed in
fire. Ground Zero is dead silence, depicting the calamity
that wiped out property and lives. Tania who was born
into the Tagore family has drawn much of her inspiration
from famous women of substance related to her by blood.
"My mother Shobha Gangulee, my aunts Aruna Asaf All,
Nandita Kriplani and Sudha Mukherjee, all inspired me
with the urge to depict inner struggle and women's
emancipation."
One thing you can't accuse artists of is staying away
from causes in one form of the other. The Affordable Art
Show was an instance in point. Lots of artist happily
lending their work, and fresh stuff most of it, for the
benefit of the animal world.Sometime ago Jatin Das
'adopted' a cyclone hit village in Orissa with the
intention of bringing it to its feet. Unfortunately
things don't go the way we plan it, despite good
intentions. Several months later when one asked "How goes
the restoration project?" The reply came in the form of a
disheartened shake of the head, "No one is helping me.
The villagers-and you can't blame them for thinking this
way-believe that I'm the man with a lot of money in my
pocket. So when I go over with the intention of directing
them to development the little boys will scamper after
me, "Paise de do, paise de do." Seems like a no-win
situation. But that doesn't keep them away.
Veteran artist DP Sibal who comes to the office one
afternoon telling us about the plan that some of the
city's well-known names in the field of performing arts
have of starting a campaign against drunken driving.
Something on the lines of, Say Mocktails (instead of
cocktails). Nothing has been finalised yet. In fact they
haven't even got together for a meeting. He mentioned
they might talk to schoolchildren-the future generation
of drinkers. It was ironic that just a few days later the
accident involving the five youngsters whose Maruti
collided with a truck in front of Hanuman Mandir
happened.

"Dr. Jai Maharaj" Information
This person's game is to use outdated articles to attract people to his
website, where he sells psychic services. What's most amusing is that many
of the groups to which his messages are crossposted do not exist. He
plagues many USENET groups. His standard method of responding to an attack
on his credibility is to repost the original article or to post the sender's
personal contact information and threaten to report the sender to his/her
ISP for spamming or making threats (the very definition of irony).

His "real" name is supposed to be Jay Stevens.
There is an anti-Jay newsgroup too:
news:alt.flame.jay-stevens
But the best place to find Jay is news:alt.fan.jai-maharaj
A member of the "flame Jay Stevens" group is "Jose Mariachi", )another
self-proclaimed "doctor"?)..."Mariachi" web site could be another bogus cash
grab remarkably similar to Stevens' site, mantra.com.
