ASTROLOGY USE BY THE ARMED FORCES

'STAR WARS' DEFENSE IS DIFFERENT IN RUSSIA

Thursday, January 22, 1998 11:14 a.m. EST

Moscow (Reuters) - A Russian newspaper blew the lid on one of
Moscow's most unusual military secrets Wednesday -- a "star wars"
naval astrology team that provides the Defense Ministry with
regular glimpses into the future.

"In the recent past, astrologers in shoulder flashes poring over
tactical maps would have existed only in a bad science-fiction
novel," the daily Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reported from St.
Petersburg, Russia's second city. "But a special military
laboratory for cosmic astrological prognoses is a present-day
reality."

The front-page article said the armed forces in the United States
and Japan also used astrologers to help predict possible military
disasters but Russia's star-gazers were in a class of their own.

"Believe it or not, every three months a summary of astrological
prognoses predicting the place and date of future extraordinary
occurrences is sent from the St. Petersburg Naval Scientific
Research Institute to the Russian Defense Ministry's General
Staff," the newspaper said.

It added that the predictions included aircraft crashes and
shipping disasters, and that the naval astrologers had an
impressive track record.

The Defense Ministry declined to comment on the story.

Komsomolskaya Pravda quoted Captain Alexander Buzinov, the head of
the astrology unit, as saying his work was aimed at providing
predictions rather than trying to avert catastrophe.

He said at one stage he had even been asked to provide an analysis
of when it would be astrologically favorable to operate on
President Boris Yeltsin's heart -- he subsequently underwent
multiple bypass surgery in November 1996.

"The prediction went to Moscow," the newspaper said. "It is not
known whether those who needed to see it actually saw it, but the
operation took place on a favorable day."

Looking even further ahead, Buzinov said he already knew who would
be Russia's next president but declined to say whose birthday was
written down inside a sealed secret envelope.

Closer to home, and good news for Moscow's hard-pressed military
machine if true, Buzinov said his team predicted Russia would face
no major military conflict up to the year 2005.

"But around 2005-2006," he said inscrutably, "Russia may well find
it useful to have a serious army."

Not for commercial use. Solely to be fairly used for the
educational purposes of research and open discussion.

"At the outset, his [Saddam Hussein's] personal chances of
survival from a military attack are excellent after about mid-day
November 15, 1998 in the time window November 1-30, 1998."
