Hitler puppet, Picassos popular at US art fair

Miami Beach - A puppet of Hitler in medical garb, a
crawling mechanical man and some pricey Picassos are
among thousands of items on show this week at Art Basel
Miami Beach, dubbed the hottest art fair in the Americas.
While the most cutting-edge art on display raised some
eyebrows, connoisseurs were keenly eyeing the more
mainstream offerings, among them some of the best known
artists of the 20th century including Keith Haring,
Fernand Leger, Rene Magritte, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso
and Andy Warhol.
"Art Basel Miami Beach is high quality, it is highly
international and it is highly innovative," said director
Samuel Keller.
"It is the best of contemporary art."
The list of galleries, museum curators and art dealers
reads like a who's who in the international world of
visual arts.
The star-studded show is an offshoot of Art Basel, a top
contemporary art fair and an international indicator of
current trends.
It marks the first time Art Basel has staged a show
outside the Swiss city it is named for.
The four-day event, which opened to the public on
Thursday, features about 5,000 works of art, ranging from
pieces by obscure young artists selling for a few hundred
dollars, to recognised masterpieces of modern art that
should fetch tens of millions of dollars.
The show is hung in 18,000 metres (200,000 square feet)
of floor space used by some 150 galleries at the Miami
Beach Convention Center, with art bleeding out into the
streets, on the beach, in parks and on billboards.
Exhibitors say sales were brisk in the first hours of the
show, building on momentum begun when some 2,000
specially-invited guests got a sneak preview.
Among the highlights of the fair is a Picasso canvas
entitled Olga, which has not been seen publicly for ten
years.
The work, owned by Galerie Jan Krugier Ditesheim of
Geneva, is part of an all-Picasso package with two
smaller paintings and a sculpture that the gallery hopes
to sell for 45 million dollars.
Drawing grins from the art watchers was a mechanical man
crawling around the floor on his elbows.
The scrubs-clad Hitler puppet, nicknamed Gerhard, drew
some chuckles but also some less than complimentary
comments from visitors who were even less impressed with
its 5,000-dollar price tag.
Organisers say they decided to reach beyond the
traditional boundaries of visual arts, staging what they
term "crossover" events including a fashion show by
designer Karl Lagerfeld and daily sunset-celebrating
happy hours hosted by "legendary international DJs,"
Keller said.
Some of the avant-garde artists were encouraged to think
inside the box, using shipping containers set up on the
beach to exhibit their works. Several artists have
integrated the minimalistic white cube into their unusual
and sometimes wacky offerings.
Art Basel Miami Beach also features a series of
performance art shows, one of which is the feeding of a
carnivorous plant, a seance at the grave of a dog named
Taxi, and a performer who uses artificial light to extend
the day one minute past sunset.
