The Americans have been engaged in destroying human life
and property in Iraq, with the ostensible purpose of
"restoring democracy" in that country after removing
tyrant President Saddam Hussein. A whole Iraqi society
has to be destroyed so that "democracy and freedom" can
flower with the benevolent bombs of the Americans. This
is a war of aggression by the Americans against the Iraqi
state. The message to the world is that if any leader or
government says "no" to the Americans it must get ready
to face the consequences, including death. America is the
only state whose writ should run in the world. What was
the fault of deposed President Saddam Hussein? As the
leader of Iraq, he wanted to defend his country's
sovereignty and territorial integrity and this was
unacceptable to the Americans.
George Bush Sr waged a war against President Hussein in
1991 but failed to topple his regime. For 12 years, the
Iraqis were punished and sanctions were imposed against
their country. Since the Iraqi President did not collapse
in the face of American hostility and sanctions, Bush Jr,
following in the footsteps of his father, has again
bombarded Iraq to liquidate Saddam, the tyrant. But the
"tyrant's" military forces and the "oppressed" Iraqis
stood by their President for three weeks and fought an
unequal war against the American aggressor. Why are the
people of Iraq dying for their country and their
President? It deserves to be stated that Americans have
been completely "neutral" to the form of government while
dealing with regimes world over.
A few telling examples may be mentioned to substantiate
the argument that Americans have only felt comfortable
with dictators, and they have always set the clock of
progress back. First, in 1953, Dr Mohammed Mossadagh, the
Prime Minister of Iran, was overthrown with the help of
the CIA and a friend of America, the Shah of Iran, was
restored as the ruler. What was Mossadagh's fault? He was
a great Iranian nationalist who wanted "democracy" for
his country and complete control over Iranian oil. This
was not acceptable to the US and the multinational
corporations because oil should be controlled and managed
by profit making MNCs. Mossadagh paid the price for
demanding the right of his nation to manage its own
affairs and control its own wealth.
The Western media, controlled by the imperialists,
launched a witchhunt against Mossadagh who was described
as "madman", "lunatic" and "threat to US interests".
Thanks to the Americans, for full 50 years Iranians have
been struggling for democracy and freedom from the Shah
and his successors. Americans have been telling the whole
world about the rising Islamic fundamentalism, Islamic
jihadis and terrorists. The seeds for "Right-wing
religious fanatic movements" in the Muslim world have
been sown by the Americans and other traditional Western
colonial powers. Iran was not allowed to "modernise"
itself on the basis of democratic governance, the counter
mobilisation against America-supported "autocratic Muslim
regimes" was launched by the Muslim priestly class.
Second, Gamal Abdul Nasser of Egypt, in 1956,
"nationalised" the Suez canal and the story was repeated.
The Iranians had "nationalised the oil company" and they
were punished. The Egyptians were punished for their act
of treachery for taking control over their national
resources. Nasser talked of Arab nationalism and Arab
socialism. He established the United Arab Rep-ublic of
Egypt, Syria and Libya. Neither Mossad-agh nor Nasser had
anything to do with Islamic fundamentalism but their
efforts to build their own countries as per their image
was not acceptable to the Western imperialist powers.
The same fate was met by Patrice Lumumba of Congo who was
replaced by Mobutu, a tyrant, with full support of the
imperialists. In Chile, Allende was replaced by Pinochet,
who was "persecuted" for crimes against his own people.
The illustrations from Iran, Egypt, Congo, Chile et al
substantiate the fact that Americans and other Western
colonisers have always nipped the nascent rising
democratic and nationalist movements in the bud .
Afghanistan clearly shows that the Americans are not at
all against Islamic fundamentalist jihadis if their
interests are served by them. From 1979 to 2001, Islamic
Mujahideen, who later on rechristened themselves as
Taliban under the leadership of Osama bin Laden, were
created, funded and supported by the Americans to fight
against the Russian intervention in Afghanistan.
The Americans lent their shoulder to the Taliban in
Afghanistan. President Bush has got $80 billion
sanctioned from the US Congress not to establish
democracy in Iraq but to hand over Iraqi oil to American
multinationals. Iranian leader Mossadagh had maintained
that "oil was not a boon" for their country. Instead, it
had brought "doom" to their nation. This is true of the
whole Arab world.
Americans did not care for the UN Security Council and
unilaterally decided to attack Iraq. They can repeat this
in the future. Is it acceptable to the Indians? The
answer is a big "no". A state without "political
sovereignty" does not have any meaning. Unfortunately,
the Vajpayee Government has tied its foreign and defence
policies to Kashmir and cross-border terrorism encouraged
by Pakistan. Such a Pakistan-centred foreign policy has
inhibited the Government from taking a principled stand
on the definition of American world order which is based
on America's right to "launch preemptive strike" against
any sovereign country.
What is the overall balance sheet of three weeks of the
unequal war fought in Iraq? First, it has been firmly
established that America had no case because the so-
called weapons of mass destruction and deadly chemicals
in Saddam Hussein's possession did not exist at all. The
UN inspectors were summarily dismissed because their
findings were not acceptable to the American
propagandists. It deserves to be clearly stated that the
"free media" of the democratic western world completely
sided with the "falsehood" and propaganda launched by the
US to demonise Saddam Hussein. Second, a great harm has
been done to the UN Security Council because any powerful
member of the council can launch a "preemptive war"
against any country without even coming to the Security
Council. What will the Security Council or the US do if
the Chinese launch a "preemptive" war against Taiwan?
Third, America's war on Iraq has alerted the Europeans
and the NATO countries and a division has occurred for
the first time with Germany, France and Russia openly
coming out against America's doctrine of "preemptive
war". Not only this, many European governments have full
support of their peace-loving people who have stood up
against the war. It is a very positive development which
has come out of a very dark chapter of the history of
illegal "three week" aggression against Iraq. If the
forces of peace in Europe continue to assert their
democratic right against "unipolar American world order",
possibilities of the em-ergence of a multipolar world
order shall become bright. A "divided Europe" can be a
countervailing force in the present unipolar world.

-Comment: Mr/Ms Bhambhri probably missed news accounts
beamed across the Globe, showing the peoples euphoria,
free at last from the shackles of the Iraqi dictator
Saddam. There is a moral inertia pervading the hearts and
minds of people like Bhambhri. Where despots and
dictators are becoming an accepted part of todays
society. The free democratic world took a stance against
Hitler, Mussolini & Co only a few decades ago:So we could
enjoy the life we do. The Americans as the defenders of
the free world do come across as prescriptive, arrogant
and are the target of envy and terror. People envy most
what they desire the most, thats human nature. America
bashing has become a favourite pastime, too useful a tool
for the impotence of certain goverments and radical
groups. Its fast becoming a badge of irrelevance past its
used by date. Bhambhri should take the blinkers off, step
into the real world. Its a democratic milieu he lives in.
Surely he wouldn't deny majority of Iraqs populaton the
same consideration. These unfortunate souls had been
subjugated at the yoke for 35 years by Saddam and his
cronies? If I was an Iraqi citizen I would be over the
moon at being free of constraints, irrepective of my
liberators being Chinese, British or Americans.

-Comment: India has nothing to do with Iraq. The only
principle which India should look after is the welfare of
the Hindus. It is in the best interests of India to be
friendly to the U.S. Remember the story of birbal and
eggplant. You should try to get a share of power in Iraq
by helping the U. S. rebuild it. What do you care about
these unrelated countries. Take care of yourself first.
Your first priority should be to liberate the whole Hindu
rashtra from Afganistan to Burma, and Tibet to Lanka. How
can you think of the freedom of other countries when your
own country is divided into 10 parts. Become whole and
powerful first. Everything else will fall in its own
place.
