DNA Scientist Apologizes for Comments on Intelligence of Blacks

A famous scientist who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine has apologized
for racially insensitive comments about the intelligence of blacks.
The Sunday Times of London printed an interview with Doctor James
Watson in which he suggested blacks are not as intelligent as whites.
The prominent laboratory where he works in New York (The Cold Spring
Harbor Laboratory) suspended Watson over the comments Thursday. And
London's Science Museum canceled a sold-out lecture Friday by the
doctor.
A statement from Watson's publicist says he is mortified over the
quotes. Watson said he cannot understand how he could have said what
he is quoted as saying, but he understands the public reaction to the
comments.
The Sunday Times of London says it recorded the interview and stands
by the quotes in its October 14 issue.
Scientists around the world are denouncing the comments and say there
is no scientific evidence that blacks are intellectually inferior.
In a statement issued after his remarks were published, Watson also
said there is no scientific proof that blacks are less intelligent
than whites.
Watson won the Nobel Prize in 1962 for his discoveries of the
structure of DNA.
The 79-year-old scientist is known for making outspoken remarks about
genes and intelligence.
Watson is in Britain promoting his new book called, Avoid Boring
People.

apologise after making a joke about the size of Jewish people's noses
on a US television chat show.
The Oscar-winning star remarked that a digitally-altered photo of her
face made her look like her "Jewish cousin", during an appearance on
Jay Leno's Tonight Show.
As Leno squirmed and the audience sat in embarrassed silence, Berry
appeared to appreciate the gravity of her error.
"Oh God, Have I just ruined my career?" she asked.
The word "Jewish" was cut from the dialogue when the show was
broadcast on Friday night, but audience members leaked full details of
the exchange onto the Internet, prompting Berry, a vociferous critic
of Hollywood racism, to issue a full apology.
"I didn't mean to offend anyone. I didn't. I didn't mean any harm … It
was just supposed to be a silly segment. I am so sorry, and I
apologize," she told The New York Post newspaper.
The actress, 41, went on to claim that her Jewish assistant had
actually come up with the nose "joke" backstage, whilst leafing
through the distorted photos that were to be used on the show.
"I guess it was fresh in my mind and it just came out of my mouth. But
I didn't mean to offend anybody," Berry said.
The photos had been created by Berry herself using computer software
which allows people to warp their own images.
Three of her assistants were Jewish, Berry added.
The one-time Bond girl, who was close to tears during her phone call
to the Post according to the newspaper, said that she had asked the
programme's producers to cut out her remarks after she realised the
offence they may cause.
Berry, who is four months pregnant, is currently in London promoting
her new film Things We Lost In The Fire.
In 2002 she became the first black woman to win the Best Actress Oscar
when she was honoured for her role in Monster's Ball.
She has also appeared in the Bond film Die Another Day, Catwoman and
the X-Men series.

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - New Orleans' embattled District Attorney Eddie
Jordan quit on Tuesday, ending a controversial four-year tenure that
saw him become the symbol of the hurricane-ravaged city's inability to
combat violent crime.
Jordan's resignation came as business leaders, city and state
officials were negotiating a deal to settle a $3.7-million
discrimination judgment against his office and weeks after he admitted
that an armed robbery suspect, later accused of shooting a police
officer, visited Jordan's live-in girlfriend while Jordan was home.
"I am resigning not because I am a quitter, but because I honestly
believe that this painful act will help prevent further disruption of
the district attorney's office, the criminal justice system and our
city's fight against crime," Jordan said.
Mayor Ray Nagin, standing beside Jordan at a Tuesday afternoon news
conference, denied that a deal to pay off the judgment prompted
Jordan's departure.
But Nagin said he has met several times with state and local officials
to discuss the judgment.
"The city is not in the position at this point in time to put any
dollars forward, but we are in a position to hopefully sit down and
maybe facilitate a settlement that would involve the state and other
players," Nagin said.
Jordan, 55, and the first African American to be elected D.A., has
been the target of criticism since shortly after taking office when he
fired 43 white employees who had served under his predecessor, Harry
Connick, who held the office for 29 years and is the father of the
singer Harry Connick Jr.
A federal jury in 2005 found that race was a deciding factor in the
dismissals. Jordan's office was slapped with a $3.7-million judgment.
After Hurricane Katrina's flood waters devastated New Orleans in 2005,
Jordan came under fire for the release of scores of violent offenders
without bringing charges.
In mid-October, Elton Phillips ran to Jordan's home shortly after
being chased by an armed robbery victim, police have said. He talked
briefly with Jordan's longtime girlfriend, Jordan has said.
New Orleans Police have named Phillips a suspect in the robbery and
the shooting of an off-duty police officer and his wife during an
early-morning robbery the day after his visit to Jordan's home.
