FCC Commissioner MICHAEL COPPS returned to his familiar theme of
anti-consolidation at the FUTURE OF MUSIC COALITION policy summit in
WASHINGTON on MONDAY (5/3), blaming his own commission for the
"CLEAR CHANNEL-ization" of radio and complaining that the "postcard
renewal" process for radio licenses has allowed public interest
obligations to be shirked.
"If I find out that we are pell-mell renewing licenses without having
reference to the record that we amassed or we're not really being any
more rigorous than we have been about it, then I'm going to make
considerable noise about it as much as I can," COPPS told the
gathering.
COPPS in the past has blamed several of the industry's perceived ills
on consolidation, especially indecency, against which he has been the
primary crusader.
