As far as can be told from the Canon, Holmes started himself on cocaine out of
sheer boredom where there were no interesting cases to be had. He also
occasionally used morphene. More information on Holmes drug addictions can
be obtained by consulting "Subcutaneously, My Dear Watson" which addresses teh
topic quite thuroughly. According to that book, a 7% solution is really not
very potent anyway. Also, I presume you know that cocaine was not even
illegal then, it was opium that was the big one. This book may be hard to find
but I know University of Illinois has a copy if you want to borrow it
through interlibrary loan.

Only in the non-Canonical book/movie of that title. Just saw the
movie (for the first time) on A&E Sat. night. I liked it, replete
with references to the Canon, plus the revisionist interpretation of
Moriarty and the Great Hiatus. The Holmes character was a bit rough,
especially for one used to Jeremy Brett - but then, he *was* going
through cocaine withdrawal at the time. The movie also has elements
of deliberate send-up in it.

date (1976, after the first oil crisis, when the Islamic world was
starting to flex it's muscles) explains some of this.

That's not suprising, Nicholas Meyer's film "Time after Time" had quite
a few references not only to Arab terrorism but positive ones to Israel
as well... Could it be that he has a position in that dispute?
