Greetings, Charles Bishop. There are 3. Mudge knows little to nothing about Hofstadter, but he does submit good jokes now and then. Tian is our resident bike-rider and Green Party activist who puts coins in piggy banks when he encounters spam. I am a long time Hof afficienado, starting with GEB back in 1980and continuing with all his subsequent major books. We have been at 3 now for what seems like years. We're desperate for anyone else.

PS Tian knows more about Hof than I gave him credit for. Mudge ataully doubts Hof's existence.

I'm sorry to say I probably won't be able to contribute much. I too read
GED back in the day and understood maybe half of it, but it was the book
to read. Was this a thriving group back in the palmy days of USENET? It's
sad to see what some groups have come to, either moribund or filled with
trolls.

Well, that's ok if you cant contribute much. Way back like in the late 90's there were people here that were quite Hofstadter knowledgable. I first came here in like 2003? and it was down to some people who discussed computers but not necessarily Hof. Tian showed up shortly after that with mysterious "I drop a 1952 D nickle in my piggy bank" quotes which took some time to decipher. And then we have Mudge. He wandered in here and had no idea who Hof is, and still doesn't. But he seems harmless enough, he's elderly and seems to have retained something of his wits (a lot, really) so to round out the "3 persons in one fan" configuration he stayed around. Sometimes I think I ran everybody off but when I got here it really wasn't a Hof fan group anymore.

I like Hof's works, but here are sections of GEB I never read, especially the part on microbiology (or perhaps you'd call it his mathematical simulation of it) since I've never much cared for the subject. There are sections of it that I've read but didn't understand at the time. Now, with 32 years of life experience later I might do better with them. What I find myself doing with it nowadays is to remember how some subject relates to something someone has written and go back and quote that material to them. And we must remember that GEB is but one tome out of 5 or 6, with yet another coming someday.

I don't like it. It's a punchline. The joke?

Oh, it has to do with a herd of cattle getting lose in a band which was playing, and marijuana suppositories, etc.

Itz a punchline. Marching band is disrupted by a rancher driving cattle. Bandleader offers rancher marijuana suppositories to go around. So a herd in the band is worth boo in the tush. National Lampoon i think.

Here it is in the form of a real live joke. Note the role reversal.

The Trail Boss's Dilemma and How It Was Solved

During the 4th of July parade in a small western town a group of cowboys was bringing its herd of cows to the cattle lot on the other side of the hamlet. Unfortunately, to get there they had to cross Main Street, where the high school band was just starting its performance.

The Parade Marshal ran up to stop them from crossing the street. “You can’t drive those cows through our orchestra!” he cried.

The oldest cowboy leaned back and said, “Whalll… what would it be worth to you to let us go through?”

The Marshal thought for a moment. “It would have to be pretty good, something extra special.”

The cowpoke reached into his saddlebag and handed the Marshal a small packet. “Lissen. In here is a bunch of marijuana suppositories. Getcha high as a kite an’ no one will know. Is it a deal?” The Marshal nodded, ordered the band to stop and let the cows across the thoroughfare.

Proving that a herd in the band is worth boo in the tush.
