On Friday (7/18/08) I received a package from the IRS notifying me
that I'm being examined (audited). This is the second audit this year
(2008). I am now at what the County calls "poverty level" and would
not be typing now in my rental if it were not for family and friends.
After my first audit in March of this year I was notified that the
examination concluded I owe $18,000 plus Pen. & Int. for a grand total
of $25,000 and some change. I screamed as this is more than I've made
in a year for the past 3 or 4 years. I immediately applied for an
appeal and within my documents found a huge income error on the part
of the auditor. I was right...The Appeals officer wrote to inform me
the auditor made a $36,000 error on my gross income and the corrected
amount I owe to the IRS was approx. $965....HUGE difference. Now I'm
supposed to be examined again by the same Auditor. This sounds like
pure harrassment or revenge! What do you Think? I'm contacting Legal
Aid today (by the way)

Sounds like you've made a wise decision.
