most miles per chew from it by riding a well maintained bicycle on that.

think they found out that people would buy bikes without the things.
That is important because they set the price based on what the typical
customer is willing to pay. Less bike for that money means more profits.
The bike dealers also like the fact that you can buy them as aftermarket
accessories, causing you take another trip to the bike shop when you
realize you need one, and maybe even get something else at the time.
That's my guess.

Today I got to see what it looks like. They always tell you to not
top off your tank to reduce air pollution. But the trouble with that
is some pumps are so sensitive on the automatic cutoff that they cut
off way before it's full. So when the automatic cutoff occurs I
always pull the nozzle partially out of the tank and go at about 1/10
speed. Tonight that didn't work too well, and I sloshed a bunch out
onto my shoe. It's pretty clear, from what I could tell.

I saw the 2008 SFMT play this evening. The man upstairs
added a very nice rainbow that framed the stage perfectly.

Yes, you're right, based on my observations of pouring the wonderful
stuff in daylight. The observation tonight really didn't enable me to
determine the color very well.

OK. That works for people who are just transporting themselves and
maybe a little extra. What about generating electricity for a whole
city? Trucking tons of goods into cities without which they could not
be inhabited? You need something like hydrogen for that.

My understanding is that "politics" is Latin for "people talking".
If that is the case, then since "we" are people, it's not possible
for us to get free of politics. Of course, mother earth will one day
get beyond being inhabited by people, but that's the other side of
TEOTWAWKI. I won't be around then, so why should I care?

The end of this stage of evolution to be replaced by something better,
maybe a nice paradigm shift?
Lots of talk has nothing to do with politics, that is, politics as
defined by most people.
Why should Mother Earth get tired of her human inhabitants? It's very
possible what we have now, billions of people united by communication
channels, is indestructible. The will to live arises at some point in
complex systems.

Maybe. I think of what we have as painfully wasteful. I don't think
earth getting tired of her human inhabitants as the problem. More likely
the humans will evolve to fit their various niches, and after the cheap
energy goes away it will involve less mixing across oceans. What will we
be after a few thousand years of that? Probably different "we"s.

Maybe all planetary civilizations go through a wasteful period in
order to boot up something better. Maybe all PC's evolve to the point
of doing little mass transfer and a lot of communication. Of course,
hydrogen would be a limitless fuel source, for it is based on 2
unlimited factors - sunlight and water.

horizon) have evolved intelligent life, then that gives Earth somebody
else to talk to, even though it may be hundreds of years between

hundreds of years - you look at the lifetime of the civilization (the
Global Brain), not the substrate (humans), which could potentially be
billions of years.
