I have been part of a monthly sci-fi book group for about three years.
This month's was THE LOST FLEET--DAUNTLESS by Jack Campbell. It is the
first of a series and brings to mind Lazaras Long and THE FOREVER WAR
(which we read recently).

It is one of the few books that everybody liked--with the reservation
that it is what it is and not great literature. Entertaining, not too
heavy, 283 pages of military space opera.

(I don't know why we did two military ones in a row.)

Did anybody point out the resemblances to Xenephon's _Anabasis_,
including the commanders murdered by treachery at the start? Not
the first, or second, or even third Mil-SF story to use that plot.

Robert--Many books were mentioned. I don't know if Anabasis was one of
them. One member claims to be familiar enough with the genre that he
made a $5 bet on how the series will continue. (There were enough
dangling questions that I could probably make some of the same
predictions.)

Anyway, it is rare that this group is in agreement in enjoying a book.
(Kinda reminds me of a certain newsgroup...)

I'm now reading Banana, The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World.
It's a fascinating read about all things banana. Everything from how
the plant reproduces to where the term "Banana Republic" came from.
Not science fiction, but the best read I've had in months. The pages
turn fast. The author is Dan Koeppel, somebody I wasn't familiar with
before reading this book.

I requested it from the library.

I love how I can do that from the computer--the only problem is that I
have more than ten books that I keep moving the request date because I
don't have time to read them.

My Aunt just gave me a shopping bag full of used DVDs for Christmas.
Yet another sand trap delaying my reading of another book....

Crossing TX, NM, AZ and CA on I-10, I saw that where there are no lights
at night there is also usually poor radio reception. What a coincidence!
