In case we haven't discussed these novels to death before:

I just rediscovered Vernor Vinge.

_A Deepness in the Sky_
_A Fire Upon the Deep_

I don't care if he is the "Next Heinlein" and who would want to be the
next ANYONE, anyway. This is great SF. It is disappointing not to
learn more of the fate of the people in the first book on reading the
second but that is the only major flaw I have found.

While I am at it, Sean Stewart's fantasies are excellent. Don't be put
off by the critics who refer to magical realism; this stuff is better
than that.
So far, I have read _Galveston_ and _Mockingbird_

Hi, Will, LTNC (a couple days for you is LTNC). Mr. Vinge is going to be
Guest of Honor at the 60th annual world con, ConJosé, this late August
and early September, in San José, California. See, www.conjose.org

What in particular did you like about Vinge's writings? Since I'll be up
there, along with the rest of the members of THS who attend, it seems
reasonble for me to dig up a copy and read at least one of them.

Try "The Peace War" and "Marooned in RealTime", which were collected under the
title "Across Realtime".

Unless my memory fails me, Vinge wrote one of my all-time favourite
short SF stories, "Long Shot" - a reliable tear-evoker, but the book
it was collected in went The Way of All Loaned Books long ago....

Tor has fairly comprehensive collection of Vinge stories
out. It doesn't include "True Names" but is pretty good otherwise
and does (checks review) include "Long Shot".
