Would anyone happen to have a clue as to why some paintings and pictures can
talk and interact with you, and others (specifically the pictures of James
and Lily and their friends in the album) can't talk. THat would be a great
way for Harry to get to know his parents. I am just wondering if I missed an
important detail

Maybe only paintings can talk, since they are only a creation of an artist, but
pictures are photographs of real people and are only limited to some movement...

The entrance to the Gryffindor tower is an interactive painting. IMO, I
think maybe the pictures that can talk are only the ones where the ppl are
still alive (like Dumbledore in his choc frog card) or those who are dead,
but their souls/spirits are free to be in the painting/photo. Lily & James
weren't free until book 4.

Based on what? The fact that there ghosts came out of the wand? whats with
that?

talking. They move but don't talk. Dumbledore just vanished from his
wizard card. Harry was trying to get away from Lockhart in their picture. I
don't know if it was meant to be such a topic for discussion. My opinion is
that only paintings can talk as that is all that we have seen. Photographs
can move but they seem to only have movement that has at least some minor
relation to what was going on when they were taken. Paintings however, can
talk to you.

That is my impression as well.
Photographs can move - and while they can hide themselves,
they cannot move to other photographs.
Paintings can speak and move from painting to painting.

Paintings seem much more lifelike, they can even get drunk, apparently,
remember Violet and her friend in Gof?

It would be interesting to know whether *all* wizard paintings are like
this or whether it has something to do with the environment at Hogwarts.
Is there any mention of paintings anywhere other than hogwarts? I can't
remember.

Tim try using your brain, just occasionally when you post, there is no
evidence of paintings or pictures becoming real, however plenty of people in
Hogwarts paintings have the ability to 'walk' through pictures to join each
other in other paintings.

In CoS, the essence of Tom Riddle Jr. in a dairy almost became real, so I figure
that it might be possible for a painting or photo to become real if one used an
appropriate spell.

The fact that black magic was used to make TR's form take shape from his diary
is no reason to rule out the use of black magic to make paintings become real.

Yeah right, of course the fact that Dumbledore won't use dark magic to fight
Voldemort totally escaped you didn't it?! I mean a person won't use dark
magic as a defence but they will allow it as a means of making pictures step
out of their frames and walk around the corridors!

Possibly.
It must be remembered, however, that the diary was created - possibly
using Dark Magic - with the purpose of being able to dominate someone
else, of being able to gain power from their soul.

I think that the painting must have been created with this purpose in
mind for the memory of the person in the painting to be able to achieve
incarnation.

We know that people in paintings can move around and visit people in other
paintings. The world of the paintings is one of the places I wonder
about; will Dean Thomas (known as an artist) paint a portrait of Harry
that will then be able to ask questions of other painted people?
And - the point of this point, really - can a portrait visit another
portrait that is in a different building? If so, a DE that could enter a
painting (or a painted DE?) might find another way into Hogwarts.

And what about those very sinister-looking monks in the painting just
below Trelawney's tower? Who are they, anyway?

(Trying to keep it fairly clean for the kiddies.) Anyone's bound to look a
bit sinister if he's "gone without" for as long as monks do. And since these
are painted monks, they've probably been keeping their vows for even longer
than normal monks.

Please, please keep quiet. If I ever find out that he's not mean, nasty
and sarcastic I'll be *very* disappointed in him.

BTW, do you still have to call him *Professor* Snape during your
'private lessons'? ;-)

He is a very clean man, don't believe everything that comes from the biased
opinions of teenage boys ;-)

Who she wasn't whining at me she was giving Draco the earache. No I didn't
bitch-slap her as it was rather amusing watching her bitch-slap Draco ;-) I
think Lucius would be ashamed of Draco if he could only see him now, I may
get Colin Creevey to take a few photos to be sent to Lucius by express owl
;-)

How are you planning to sneak Colin into the Slytherin dungeon?

Well it was funny but Professor Snape stopped her hitting Draco in the end
on the grounds it was embarrassing for the Slytherin males to keep seeing
Draco being such a wimp.

Colin borrowed an invisibility cloak from another Gryffindor, when the
photographs were suggested he was very keen to be the one to take the
pictures, I must say he did get some good ones, Lucius is not going to be
impressed with young Draco. Most fun everyone has had since the bouncing
ferret episode, everyone except Draco that is..... ;-)

You do realise Draco's daddy can afford to buy him an invisibility cloak...

I do realise that I just wonder why he hasn't, may be he is scared Draco

Good point, I'm surprised that none of Harry's roomies have borrowed his.

Yes nothing like an invisibility cloak for investigating those unusual
noises from the bedroom ;-) I wonder if there is actually a charm that
prevents students sneeking into the dormitories for... erm... shall we say
romantic purposes. ;-)
