In DH, when we looked at Snape's memories thru Harry's eyes we saw him
tending to Dumbledore muttering incantations and forcing a thick
golden potion down his throat then telling him the spread of the spell
can't be stopped.

I wondered then as I do now why they didn't just lop his hand and/or
arm off as they do with a gangrenous extremity??

From HBP his arm worked as well as ever and it seemed only his hand
was affected. It had an effective blood flow as evidenced by the way
he slashed it in order to access the cave so why not lop it??

Beign a dark arts spell, perhaps you can't just lob it off. It'd
always spread. Like how Arthu'rs gash couldn't be sealed, and
George's war could never be regrown.

Or maybe overwhelming guilt by DD over Ariana, and he decided it was
time to pay the piper.

Dd didn't seem to mind dying but I imagine he'd have stayed around to help
Harry if he could - though even then, when he had agreed that Snape should
finish him rather than Draco, he didn't exactly go out of his way to leave
helpful clues for Harry, he made him work for them...

Anyway, the last thing anyone needs is to chop off their hand, only to
find that it now has a mind of its own.

But it did work. Harry won, V was defeated, Harry still lived. Maybe
not the most scenic journey, but Harry arrived at the right
destination, and finally got the huge family he always wanted.
