I have my own favourite ideas....
For Dumbledore I would like to see Anthony Hopkins, or indeed Richard Harris
who I understand is favourite, would be pretty good. Or perhaps Donald
Sutherland?
Sirius Black - Jonathon Pryce, or Richard E Grant
Snape just has to be Anthony Sher
Gilderoy Lockhart I could see Hugh Grant as ok, but Michael Gambon would be
terrific as an overblown aged queen.
The Nurse character (forget her name) - I see Miriam Margolys (Yes I can't
spell her name) or the lady who played "Nursie" in the second Blackadder
series
Hagrid seems to be confirmed as Robbie Coltraine, though G Depardieu on
stilts would be a visual treat, if not a linguistic one. There is a great
"big bloke" actor who appears in East Enders every now and then, and is
renowned for not giving interviews - he would be good too (and if anyone
knows who I mean, then tell the others!)
And that character who looks into crystal balls and stuff - what about Jane
Horrocks?
Well I could go on, it is a while since I read the first book, and I have
forgotten who all the characters are. Perhaps I should re-read it?

According to some websites, Richard Harris is now officially confirmed
(this happened on Oct 25th).
> Or perhaps Donald Sutherland?
Not a bad idea, and he'd probably have enjoyed himself, but he *is*
American, which is a bit of a handicap in such a very British story. I
love him. Several weeks after seeing the film, the medical checkup
scene in "Space Cowboys" still has me rolling in the aisles.

Actually, Sutherland was born in Canada. Don't know his
current citizenship.

Harris has it for sure, but that doesn't keep us from speculating on who
they ought to have cast. :-) Sutherland is the best American I have
heard suggested. My own first choice would have been Ben Kingsley, with
Paul Scofield a near second. Or Patrick MacNee, with Diana Rigg as
McGonagall; an Avengers reunion would have been too great.
>
> Sirius Black - Jonathon Pryce, or Richard E Grant
They're both a bith small for the way I picture Sirius; I could actually
see either of them as Lupin. In fact, I'd really like Pryce as Lupin,
assuming that they are going to cast Peter, Sirius, and Remus to be the
roughly the same age as Alan Rickman, who is playing Snape.
>
> Snape just has to be Anthony Sher
Rickman has it. Don't get me started on the age thing; the folks who
have been here a while have heard it all before. I'd have cast Michael
Maloney. I don't know Anthony Sher, and I can't find him on the movie
database.
> Gilderoy Lockhart I could see Hugh Grant as ok, but Michael Gambon would be

Yeah. I am kind of pushing for Nicholas Farrell, who plays Tom in
Branagh's In the Bleak Midwinter (aka A Midwinter's Tale), but I could
see either of those two. Gambon might be a bit old for Lockhart as
portrayed in the book, but I imagine they'll either play him older in
the movie or will make him an American.
> The Nurse character (forget her name) - I see Miriam Margolys (Yes I can't

FUNNY! I can see it. Of course, I'm picturing her as she was then, and
those things are nearly 15 years old; I don't know what she looks like
now.
A fifteen-years-ago Rowan Atkinson would be my top choice for Snape, but
he looks too old now.

Dunno. Hi, I'm a stupid 'merkin and don't know the show. :-)

She looks a bit young for Trelawney. I was thinking either Celia Imrie,
(who plays a wonderful flake of a character in the previously-mentioned
Midwinter's Tale) or Joan Collins (who plays a character with a will of
iron in the same movie); it depends on whether you want to emphasize the
flakiness or the fraudulence. I think it might be interesting to have
someone like Collins, who usually plays such strong characters, in this
role.

Oh, definitely! :-)
Lisa, who thinks re-reading is always a good idea
Rickman's officially in. It was announced sometime last week, I think.
Lisa
No-one knows who he is I guess? He's been in loads of stuff on British TV
and his picture is in the Radio Times (TV guide) this week. I've never
seen anyone who could convince as Lupin (or Black, for that matter) but I
wonder if this bloke looks a bit like him. He also gives a very intelligent
performance.
Is there anyone out there who knows who I mean?

Mr. Hopkins does not fit the role at all.
T.R.
Of course, all characters from later books are all hypotheticals for the
future right now, because this is the first book, and people such as Lupin
and Lockhart and Sirius are not going to be in the first movie.

I saw him in Twelfth Night; he's good. He's very slightly pretty for
the way I picture Lupin, but only slightly (and they may have played up
the more feminine aspects of his looks because he was playing Sebastian,
who has to look enough like his sister Viola so that one could mix them
up). I could see it. He's about 33, so about the right age for the
book. (Of course, if they keep Alan Rickman as Snape, he wouldn't be
plausible as Snape's contemporary, but he is right for a book-aged
Lupin.)
Is he actually blond, or was that just for the Twelfth Night role?
Lupin's hair is light brown with a lot of grey, but Mackintosh's skin
tones, as I recall, are such that he'd not look weird with light-brown
hair. All in all, I could see it. I'd still prefer Ralph Fiennes or
Linus Roache from this age category, but I'd not complain too much about
Mr. Mackintosh.
Lisa
I wouldn't say "not at all"--he does well in mentor roles. But
basically I agree; he's physically all wrong for it, and there are too
many other folks who would be better.

Eeep! They have to bend the rules! It would be just *unfair* if we
couldn't cast Trelawney as a Californian sterotype!
Emmy Who Doesn't Mind THe All British Cast, But Must Insist On
Using The Right Sterotypes. :o)
I just about spewed tea all over my keyboard picturing Trelawney as a
California crystal-gazer. Too funny.
My ONLY problem with that is that I see Trelawney as much older than
your average new-age type. Close to McGonagall's age. It wouldn't even
surprise me to learn that Minerva and Sybil were in school together.
Speaking of California stereotypes, here's Lisa's Bold Prediction for
today: If they Americanize only one character, that character will be
Gilderoy Lockhart.

New age? Go back a bit, alright a lot, further and you've got hippies:
incense, bangles, and mysticism. Trelawney would be /wonderful/ played
like that.

Not a bad idea: it would prevent the character being too much like Ludo
Bagman. Someone like Brad Pitt could probably manage it very well: you
need guts to be an overbearing prat in lilac-coloured robes!

It's not. She confirmed on her show last week when JKR was on that
Columbus didn't even consider her. Which, from a sound standpoint, is
good; her British accent, though amusing, is VERY bad. As JKR said when
Rosie tried it out for her, "See, you're doing Dick van Dyke." Funny
JKR.

Not subtle enough, I think; his villains are all a little over-the-top.
My call for voice, style, and mannerisms would be Derek Jacobi, but he's
physically wrong for it. If they do go CGI or something, maybe Jacobi
or someone like him can do the voice.
Lisa
i dunno. when he played as the werewolf he was very subtle. i think that if

Rosie is too tall anyway. Even if the Weasley boys are tall (and we
know at least Ron is), Rosie is a little taller then we could expect
young teenaged boys to be (I'd put Rosie at about 5'5"- 5'7" and Mrs
Weasley at about 5'-5'2".)
And besides, the Ron they cast was short, so she'd deffinitly be too
tall.

Richard Griffiths, Fiona Shaw and Zoe Wannamaker are already in

What next? Warren Mitchell for Fudge? Steven Fry for Gilderoy
(come to think of it that might just work)

Life is a bed of roses.
Just try jumping into a bed
of roses and you'll know what I mean.
No, no, no! She's a fine performer but she's *not* Molly Weasley... too
smooth, too polished, too...too *American*. You've seen Julie Walters? Now
there's a lady who can carry off all the aspects of Mrs Weasley. And look
like a slightly less than comfortably-off British woman with seven (?)
children and a slightly eccentric husband into the bargain. Can you really
imagine Rosie in threadbare robes coming out of an overgrown pigsty to feed
her chickens? I guess you must be able to but personally I really, really
can't.

Oh, now that *is* a good idea and we're never given any idea of the Fat
Lady's nationality... I could see Rosie hamming it up nicely.
HELENA
Oh me too! A little old perhaps but then Snape's had a hard life by the
sound of it and could well be played slightly older than the mid thirtiesish
I assume he's supposed to be. I rewatched the film "Bob Roberts" the other
day in which Rickman plays a machiavellian political manager called Lukas
Hart (seriously great film incidentally. If you've not seen it - why not?)
Every time Rickman was on screen my partner and I were almost yelling "Yes!
That's Snape! Perfect choice!" And he plays such *wonderful* bad guys.
Actually I'm pretty happy about the whole cast. I'm reserving judgement
on Verner Troyes and Warwick Davies simply because I don't know much of
their work and, *goddammit*, I can't *believe* Rik Mayall isn't playing
Peeves. I mean the role could have been *written* for him. John Cleese for
Nearly Headless Nick - it's not inspired but it works. Maybe I'm just
disappointed he won't get to play Fudge (if we get that far).
I'd love to see Julie Walters as Molly Weasley. Now that *would* be
inspired casting. (*Please* not Rosie - I've no particular dislike of her
but she's just not right for Molly - far too American to ever appear
British.)
HELENA

Oh, now that is a great idea. Oddly enough in my head I do hear
Lockhart with one of those mid-atlantic accents. Lockhart would work very
well as an American of the over-shiny Hollywood type. JKR never states he is
British either. In fact I will go so far as to say Lockhart *should* be
American (by emigration if not by birth). I t would fit very well.
