Anyway, here it goes: As I was rereading PoA, it struck me how the
paintings in Hogwarts talk and interact with the witches and wizards
while photographs don't. It made me wonder if portraits were ever
painted of Lily and James, because then Harry would be able to talk
and interact with them. However, do the paintings take on the
characteristics and feelings of their living subjects, or do they
acquire personalities all their own? Was the Fat Lady a portrait of a
living person? Sir Cadogan? Why do only certain paintings talk?
What is the difference in the media?
Perhaps the Fat Lady and Sir Cadogan are specially charmed. I'm
really curious what others think about this.

may be the artist puts more work and a part of his soul into the
painting when doing it?
Photos and prints are done in seconds while paintings need hours of
concentrated work.

I don't know the answer to your question, but wanted to thank you for
thinking of that. Those paintings bug me too, but I was unable to
express it. Why aren't they tipping certain characters off about the
goings on around the castle?

We don't know if all paintings talk, yet. Just the fat lady and sir codgion (SP
don't have reference for correct spelling). the mermaid in the prefect's
bathroom didn't talk to Cedric, just fanned the tale and waved excitedly.
