The latest estimate on Amazon for the new book is _next fall_ and
Amazon is not noted for being pessimistic.

Just a tip: Don't preorder it if you are over forty and/or in poor
health.

Martin isn't our bitch, but he's a bitch.

In other words, they are tired of answering queries, and picked a date
so people would shut up.

Are they accepting preorders again? What would be the point? All the
credit cards will expire before the book is published.

Martin needs to hire a ghost writer.

I'm not all that gloomy and not at all grumpy. With the Martin thing,
it is much more a matter of losing interest than of being upset.
I've seen preview pages or whatever you call them on his website of
the alleged next book and they don't look all that good anyway.

Glad you got your new computer and smoochies back at you.

The keen insights, mainly. The beard and sailor hat were just the

Yeah, or whatever weird clone-cyborg-Martin they brew up to finish the
books, using pieces of his brain tissue recovered from the comic
convention where his fans finally run him to ground and beat him to
death with copies of Dreamsongs XII.

Well, you know what you need to do, don't you? Buy the book, and then

I might even do that... Actually, there's a chance my brother's already
bought it, in which case I might be able to nick it from him.

*yoink* as they say.

I don't seem to do as much reading as I used to, but I think I would

The latest book was really quite good. As you may have seen from the
Monkeyhouse, there were enough awesome moments in it for me to
assemble a small Compendium of Awesome for several of the main
characters. There were some great resolutions and it was an endless
relief to see the plot go forward again.

Think "that great big creaking groaning blood-dripping juggernaut
dragged by the dead inside the sword dragnipur" when I say "the plot".
If you know what I mean.

If you don't, then read some Erikson.

Or, you know, don't. Because they're like the Wheel of Time but with
more characters and countries and plots and pages. And no end in
sight.

Turns out the brother didn't have it, and gave me a strange look when I
asked if he'd bought a Wheel of Time book... I suppose it serves me
right! Maybe I should just buy it myself, especialy given what you're
saying about it being better and actually doing stuff! I'm trying to
work out if I've missed any books between the last one I read and the
new one...

To the Wikipedia!

Hmmm. I don't think I've read Knife of Dreams... Definitely read
Winter's Heart, and I think I read the one after...

Hmmm.

Well, it's not like anything's going to have happened in KoD...

I don't recall anything happening in Knife of Dreams. Certainly not in
comparison to the things that happened in The Gathering Storm.

Although Knife of Dreams was a big improvement on Winter's Heart and
Crossroads of Twilight. We seem to recall agreeing (at least Janica
and I) that Knife of Dreams felt a bit more like classic Jordan, like
he was getting his mojo back and starting to get back into the story
and everything.

But yeah, can't remember anything much happening, even so.

I tend to completely lose the plot every time I start to read a new
Erikson book, but that's okay because they tend not to connect up to
previous plots for a long time, and then when they do Erikson is
usually good enough to provide a bit of a reminder of what was going
on previously, for us slowpokes.

But then, I recently started to read Toll the Hounds, and it was
evidently just too long since I read the previous book. Lost the plot
and just never got it back again, and gave up and read Inkheart
instead.

Maybe I should investigate the library... I'm pretty sure we have at
least a couple within sensible distances. The other half keeps going to
them anyway!

Hmmm. Might be worth trying to find... If it was like Winter's Heart,
then yeah, no point in reading it, could just start the next book. But
if ... actual plot happens! it might be worth at least skimming it.

That said, there's probably a plot summary on the interwebs somewhere
anyway. But that feels like cheating...

Have you ruled out the possibility that she's a crack addict?

Well, follow her anyway. If it turns out to be a library, get the
book. If it turns out to be a crack-house, well, they might still have
a copy.

It's win-win.

And also, do you have any idea of the argument-winning power of the
phrase, "yeah, well you're a crack addict."?

The last few books almost had to be skimmed. Even this most recent
one, it was tempting to skim some of the (rare) boring draggy
chapters.

And I don't mean the chapters where Rand dressed in women's clothing.

>That said, there's probably a plot summary on the interwebs somewhere

Are you agonising over this, or just babbling back and forth in the
hopes that I will lose interest and walk away, thus saving you from
the effort of having to do anything? Because I will not walk away.

Laughing at you, however, I have not ruled out.

Like how she manages to put up with me.

Because nothing gets people more in the mood for crack than reading Jordan.

Hmm, I don't know, don't those drug addict types tend to be
highly-strung and jittery? I would have thought she would have even
less patience if she were a drug addict ... so maybe I misjudged.

Or maybe you're a part-time dealer. Is that what you were saying here?
