So, now that I realize you guys are still around, I was thinking, since i'm going to be getting a nice shiny linode virtual private server, why not host a news server? i could see about setting it up for binaries and letting my friends use it.
What do you guys think?
news.flufftails.se (or something) sound good?
would be cool to setup a usenet server, especially if i could set it up for binaries.

If it floats your boat, why not?

Not really much point in doing it save for having a local leafnode on your LAN to basically give you cached access. Otherwise you're not really gaining anything.

fair enough. i didn't have my heart set on it.
usenet pretty much dead, then?
if there's no reason to run your own server, then there's no reason to use it at all.

While you could create a stand-alone NNTP server, the power of NNTP
came from peering arrangements. That is, messages posted by clients of
your server would be forwarded to other servers, they'd forward to
others, etc.
The trick is the "peering arrangement"... Critter.net used to be
peered so that alt.fan.furry from it was the same alt.fan.furry from
Giganews, or from XYZ...
Critter is no longer peered (the uplink wanted too much money for a
free server, as I recall) and as a result alt.fan.furry has multiple
personality disorder. This post came in via Earthlink (Giganews
contracted service). Someone just using critter.net as a news server
won't see this post -- and any posts to alt.fan.furry using critter
won't be seen here. I don't know how many other servers in the "furnet"
are still active.
