I'm not an artist. But I enjoy beautiful artwork! Whether it
is cartoony, "furry", or true wildlife related.
I think it is only fair to pay or reward an artist for sharing
their artwork.
Sure, it is nice when an artist posts on a web site or one of the
various archive sites a scan of their drawings. I think this is very
generous of the artist. I also realize that that image is theirs and
take the necessary effort to protect it and associate the artist with
the piece.
It is also nice when an artist shares her work for a small amount.
Because I know the beauty of Monika's work, I think $10 is a "steal".
Likewise, there are many other artists who share their art with us
via 'zines or personal 'folios. I happily support those artists whose
work I enjoy.
It is an extra joy when an artist agrees to work on a commission.
The artist in this case is agreeing to spend their valuable time doing
a special drawing or painting for me. In this case, I often feel that
the little amount of money we agree upon is the least I can do. It is
also my hope that the artist enjoys working on my commission.
However, the ultimate joy, at least to me, is when an artistic
friend surprises me by sending me a drawing or a painting. In this
case, I try to express my gratitude and thanks in as many ways
possible.
So, instead of complaining that some artists charge money for
their work, I take another view. I'm thankful that so many artistic
folks share their works; whether for free or for $1.00 a page or
even $8.00 a page.
