A bit of information on the case: The possibility of gang involvement has
not been mentioned, but it certainly cannot be ruled out. It is
currently classified as "An act of random violence", sadly, an all too
often occurence. I lost a good friend a few years ago to a similar
incident, it never makes any sense.
I know the detective involved in the case (at least the one reported in
the paper...), and he's a very good man. About all they can do is rule
out drugs or "known acts of retribution" (that is, no police history, and
no known enemies...), leaving a sensless act of violence.
At least with the weather in California, they'll have a clear flight
skyward...

have this from Zsanene, Dave's wife. Right now, it's looking like random
shooting/violence. They were just heading over to a friends and neither
were involved in drugs or gangs."

From my understanding on how the police see it, whether it's gang member
shooting at other supposed members of a rival gang, or of the same gang,
or just an innocent bystandar (in this case, two of them), it's termed an
act of gang violence.... In any case, it's ugly. :( (Yes, we have the
same problems here in Small-Town Eureka, CA, thanks to marijuana, cocaine
and heroin trafficking, due to this being a port town...)

I answer. It's my friend Timberwolf, calling me with news that David
Klinkler had been shot to death the day before. Numbly, I ask
questions, then hang up. I go get the paper, figuring out that somebody
was just playing a really sick joke.
No such luck. There it was, San Diego Union-Tribune, page b1, black
& white. Words on the paper, telling me that one of my better friends
just went to the summerland.
By noon, I'd called several other friends with the news. Some had
heard, others just found out from me. All of us were in shock.
There's a part of the mind telling you that this is a bad dream, and to
wake up. I had just seen David a few days ago. I remember him taking
the CSIS 110 intro to coomputers class last semester - the same one I t/a
for. I call the class's intructor - Dr. Gary Berkowitz. "Uncle" Gary
had accepted my recommendation that David be his new t/a for the class,
and I was going to tell David next week.
By 2:00pm, I'm at the site it happened. The police tape is down,
it's been cleaned up. There's 20-30 of us, standing there, candles
burning on the ground next to a chain-link fence with signs on it. The
Daily Californian newspaper suggested "possible drug involvement", but all
of us knew better. We're all both sad and angry - sad at the loss of
two friends, anger at both the monsters that would do this, and the paper
that would get things so utterly wrong. The article was a slap in the
face to everyone who knew them. Later, I write a letter to the editor,
and use my FAX Modem to send it in. (A few days later, I'll get a call
from the reporter. Others had also sent in letters that took the
article apart, and he wants to know the real David. I tell him. He
says that it matches everything else that their friends told him after the
article. No Mr. Reporter, we're not letting you drag our friends names
and reputations though the mud.)
I go to pay my respects to Zsanene. I hold her, and remember her and
David's wedding, when I showed up to the wedding only to be told that I
was going to give away the bride ! It's a sweet memory, and I hold on
to it, remembering warmth, and laughter, a attempt to deny this horror.
I go to various people's houses, making sure that everyone I know is
okay. I'll grive later, but for now, I want to be there for people.
Finally, I end up at a ladyfriend's house. Finally, I can cry the tears
I've been holding back.
There's no real words to explain how I feel. Right now, it's been
numbed away. I keep asking myself why, but no answer comes out.
Go with the gods David. And you too Gary. For you both, there
shall be a returning.

Tygger, there's several people who won't be at CF that will want copies

They went to her house (apartment)immediately after the shooting, in search of help and escape from the police.
She gave her name as Little Mary. That was as much as she would tell me. I hope this information helps to solve the crime. I am no longer in San Diego but I will always be grateful for all the help Z and Dave gave me in my time of need.
I hope life has been especially good to you Z. You are a truly great person. I have become a Christian and am doing well...life is strange, isn't it?
