OK, if your point is that "there's not a dimes bit of difference between the
Democrats and the Republicans," then I see where you're coming from. I
don't completely agree with it, but I know what you're saying. But Obama
and Nixon couldn't be more different.
Regarding Obama, I think the jury is still out on him. He's got at least 3
more years to go. The question is whether or not he'll challenge the
entrenched status quo interests, ala Teddy Roosevelt. His personality
doesn't look like someone who would do that, but I'm willing to keep an open
mind and give him a chance. He's a remarkable man who has accomplished very
impressive things in his life. I wouldn't count him out yet.
That being said, I think people put way too high expectations on what one
person, even the most powerful person in the world can accomplish. We've
spent years putting ourselves into this economic and other mess. It aint
going away quickly.

What's so valuable about poppy fields? You can grow poppies in just
about any country in the world. You can grow poppies in all of the lower
48 states and Hawaii, and, for all I know, you can grow them in Alaska

While the United States played a very important role in the fight
against Nazi Germany, strictly speaking it was the Russians, the
British, the Canadians, the Australians, the New Zealanders, and a bunch
of other non-Americans that "pushed Hitler back". Think of the US Army
as the Mariano Duncan of WW2.
Leaving aside the ridiculous comparison between Hitler and Saddam
Hussein --- one of them commanded modern economy and what was at the
time the world's most powerful army, the other was in charge of a poor
"developing" country that was badly screwed up because it had been
dominated by foreign interests that had no interest in sharing Iraq's
oil wealth with actual Iraqis --- it's not exactly clear that the UN, or
anybody else, has any right to march into a sovereign state and dictate
terms to them.
Now, you raise a very interesting question about Barack Obama. There's
no doubt that his promise to end the war in Iraq was popular and gained
him a lot of votes, and probably the White House job, so why won't the
"Powers that Be" let him get on with it? My hunch is that if you treated
this as a real question, with answers, you might be able to learn something.

I think that if you'll look to UN performance in Yugoslavia
and Rwanda, it should be relatively clear why Gulf War II
happened. The UN lacks something like "moral authority".
And please, I am fully aware that the evidence used to justify
the thing wasn't very good. But that wasn't the argument that
was being made at the time...
