Mr. Ulrich you must know.
And a slightly early merry Christmas to all at AFFZ.

That is fascinating stuff. I had really no idea that song was about
that, and now I feel this weird sensation of a 1970's version of Frank
poking me and smirking. Mother, Mary and Josef indeed.

CRANK SOME FRANK!
I remember in the Miles book *Frank Zappa in his own words* Frank mentioned
an album by Pat Buttram. Another actor with a distinctive voice and played
in similar type-cast roles. A similar comparison could be made between Sonny
Tufts and John Wayne. Both are on the Freak Out list, setting aside the
sharp contrast of their career successes.
For this and my experience of his humor I thought Andy was really about Andy
Devine the movie actor. I took it as Frank's way of poking funny at main
stream Americana. Beyond that I've just enjoyed the song and not attempted
to go Watson and read more into it than that.
Like Mower B says: Crank some Frank!
I've always wondered what this song is about. After reading this essay and
rereading the lyrics, I think he's pretty close.
What I've yet to hear an explanation of is this. What is "sublime" about
Andy's thong rind? And how/why is it the "wrong kind?" What would be the
right kind of thong rind be like?
In any event, even though Andy Devine was known as a bit player in B grade
westerns, I'll always remember him from his Saturday morning kids program,
Andy's Gang, and the memorable phrase "Pluck your magic twanger, Froggy."
When I was a kid, we laughed hysterically at the skits with Andy and Froggy,
the Gremlin. Andy has a bit of a cult following for these shows. Here's a
clip which still makes me laugh:

When I saw FZ wrote a song about him, at first I assumed that it was
something about Andy's Gang, but could never see the connection between the
song and the show.

Indeed.

FZ was old enough that he may well have associated "Pluck your magic
twanger, Froggy" with the originator of the phrase, Smilin' Ed
McConnell. Smilin' Ed's Buster Brown Gang was on radio from 1944 to
1953, and on television from 1950 to 1955. Andy Devine took over when
Smilin' Ed died.

I'll guess you are speaking about:
Pat Buttram: Off his rocker. Warner Bros W1455
A great actor, he played alot of western roles, but might be
best remembered as "Mr. [Eustace] Haney" on Green Acres.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Buttram
It was just uploaded on alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.comedy
if your server retains things long enough. Like GiGanews.
An ICON of history remembered for his last role on TV.
But boy, did he do it well ...Mr. Haney was great.

About as RARE as it gets, boyz n girlz..
Brilliant. Thanks to both of you.
Though the interpretation in the second link is all a bit speculative for my
taste. If Frank wanted to write about loss of faith in god why would he be
so obscure about it when he was so explicit about various other subjects?
Maybe he never quite escaped from that catholic upbringing.

The more I think about it, the less I think this song is about Andy Devine.
Extrapolating from the essay you posted, here my wild guess of an
interpretation of the lyrics (in parentheses):
Andy de vine (Ain't he divine, God-like)
Had a thong rind (foot callous)
It was sublime (considered sacred by some)
But the wrong kind (not my taste in religion)
I know it's a stretch, but it's the only interpretation of these lyrics that
makes any sense to me (in an FZ/bizarre way).
sometimes i think that way too much interpretation goes into frank's
lyrics. he wasn't trying to be a deep, heavy poet type. he's admitted
on several occasions that his lyrics were stupid. andy devine was a
funny name. thong rind? probably something that he heard someone say
and it amused him.
on a somewhat related note, i had to go to a jobsite where i was
instructed to look for the lead carpenter. when i asked what his name
was, i was told to ask for "dick devine". i thought it was some sort
of a put-on but it turned out there was such a person. how would you
like to go through life with a name like that? sounds like a gay porn
star or something.
