DAME Elisabeth Murdoch has not previously had much in common with rock
musician Frank Zappa but they now share a friend in Allan Zavod.
Zavod is a Melbourne musician who toured as Zappa's keyboardist for 18
months in the 1980s.
He also has a career as a classical musician and composer for movies
such as Disney's 2001 Shirley Temple biopic Child Star.
It is this aspect of Dr Zavod's musical expertise of which Dame
Elisabeth is a supporter.
Yesterday the venerable arts patron and the keyboardist-composer jointly
announced a competition for emerging classical-jazz fusion performers
through Monash University.
Dr Zavod said he invited Dame Elisabeth to sponsor the award after he
became aware she was a fan of the genre that fuses classical and jazz
compositional and performance styles.
"I am very enthusiastic about these awards for young tertiary students
throughout Australia, who struggle without much financial assistance,"
Dr Zavod said.
Three finalists in the awards will receive cash prizes and be invited to
perform at Monash's Theatre in the Round event.
The winner will also perform in the Robert Blackwood Hall.
Dame Elisabeth's support for classical music is well-known -- the main
hall in the Melbourne Recital Centre is named in her honour.
