He Seems to Have an Invisible Touch

BLAH-BLAH, BLUH-BLUH, BUH-BUH, BAH-BUM (kick) PAH, BOOM (no crash
cymbal): So goes the most famous drum fill in the history of pop music.
As the longtime live drummer for both Phil Collins and Genesis, Chester
Thompson has gotten to double everyone’s favorite easy lover on the epic
tom-tom explosion that defines the classic “In the Air Tonight,”
countless times in front of countless concert-goers. But seriously … his
extensive list of session and touring credits includes musical
heavyweights the likes of Frank Zappa, Weather Report, Tower of Power,
Santana and Wayne Shorter, to name but just a few. When he’s not busy
with all that, you can find him teaching drum lessons at Nashville’s mom
and pop Mecca for the percussively inclined, Fork’s Drum Closet, or
directing the student jazz ensemble at Belmont University. Thompson’s
versatile playing style infuses a breadth of chops, ranging from nuanced
jazz flourishes to thunderous stadium-sized bombast. He’ll showcase the
former, with a mix of Latin and Caribbean grooves, when he visits the
Nashville Jazz Workshop, as part of their Snap on 2&4 series. Appearing
alongside Thompson will be such lauded musicians as Lori Mechem (piano),
Roger Spencer (bass), Rod McGaha (trumpet) and Todd London (percussion
and steel drum).

Which drum in a standard drum kit goes BLAH?

And which goes BLUH?

Just got the last two tickets. Roger Spencer (bass) set up an extra
barstool so we can go. I haven't seen Chester play for almost 35 years
when he rolled out w/ George Duke through the haze of a cheesy fog
machine on stage in Charleston WV.

Between this and the 200 Motels DVD, biggest FZ week for me in a
while.

Another post next week.

The snare.

The same snare, tuned differently.

I don't think he ever played that bit anyway, with or without the
BLAH-BLAHs. I think Phil sang that one at the drum kit.

Good show. Great venue for Nashville. BYOB.

First set, five songs of which two were Monk tunes (twisted as Chester
called them), the best of the set. The other three were spirited romps
as well. Chester got extended solos in all songs. Unfortunately had to
leave after the first set.
Chester was just getting warmed up. -J
